The vast majollity of my riding is solo or small groups (4 or less). I just do not enjoy riding in close proximity to people I don't know and relying on their pointing out hazards/handling skill.
If I am out at the weekend I am usually there to work and I don't see what training benefit is gained by wheel sucking in a large group. It actually annoys me when large groups marginally overtake me and ease off, leaving me in their midst working at 70% of planned effort. The net effect though is usually me working at 110% of planned effort to break away !
I love riding on my own because I get to choose when and where I cycle. By contrast, the local road club do the same route EVERY Saturday without change or their APRs and bunch training rides which don't interest me.
Good grief. I'll bet they're fun to go out for a drink with.
Alone for all my training rides, including rides over over 200km. The only time I ride with others is in the 3 events I do each year.
For me it is the times I got out (at 6am on the weekends), and in the evening after work. Plus I haven't met anyone with similar goals to me, and I do just like going out and being alone. Also, no stopping (never had a cafe stop) and I only have to deal with my issues.
Alone or maybe 2 up.
I'm just not a 'club' person in any walk of life.
It's a nuisance entering events though if you're not attached, but happy to contribute additional fees to the organising club.
99% solo.
Went out with a decent club the other day and it was swift. 25 man group absolutely flying at 8 am on a Sunday morn. I'd join a club just to keep me off the Kronenbourgs on a Sat night. I won't though, not really a clubman type..
Do we think riding long solo rides makes you a stronger rider or is it the sprinting off the corners in a group that's gonna help more?
definitely a stronger rider on your own as no protection from the elements you get in a group. Obviously in a group you can go faster and if I was considering racing then would need to go into one, but I am not.
I think they both have benefits - obviously solo rides mean you're always working on the front, but fast group rides are where I really get my fitness - they push me outside my comfort zone, the group is a buzz and you keep coming back for more, and before you know it, you're the one pushing on the front.
To the OP, my long Sunday rides tend to be in a group, and shorter solo adventures if I get out during the week. However, I'm moving house soon, not sure if I will find a local group out at 8am (Holmes Chapel if anyone can point me in the right direction). I might have to ride the 20 miles to meet up with my current lot.
Solo +1,
As cycling is not popular in my area.
Most people here can't even image a bike over 1000usd...
Sigh...
I'm a member of two clubs but rarely have the time to ride with them. When I do, I'm discouraged a bit by a lot of the back and forth jostling at the front which can sometimes splinter the group. In the end, I spend most of my time riding solo. I don't have a lot of time to ride to begin with, so when I do ride I want to be focused. I do miss the camaraderie though...
Clubs like to ride around at 8am on a Sunday when I like to be sleeping. Much warmer at 3pm too.
8am is too late for me
The deal with the wife is back by 12, I have to be out the door by 7 to get a 75 miler in!
What is this whiff you speak of?
"You should sleep late man; It's just much easier on your constitution" - Beastie Boys
Same here! I rarely sleep after 6 anyway, and the roads at that time on a Sunday are beautifully quiet.
I've never ridden with a club, and have a bad impression of some from how they behave on sportives. Not to say I haven't thought about joining one, but I can't commit to the same ride time every week either.
I am quite happy riding on own, and have a bunch of mates too.

I used to ride with friends as a kid and explore as a young teen on my own, then back in a pack/club then a became a ride leader - now need fitness!
I like the ideas above such as goal orientated rides on your own such as: hills or intervals and catching up with a club now and again.
Working long hours too, so I'm in a similar boat as everyone here trying to fit the rides in.
Riding clubs for one? Thought that was Strada!
My riding times are too inconsistent to consider joining a club (plus there's nothing that close to me - I did look into it).
I'm time pressured enough without spending 30 minutes of my limited cycling time stopped at a cafe as well
I've never really tried the chain-gang thing or a club ride though - so I may be missing out
Mostly on my own, allows me to focus on what i need to be doing that day...intervals, hill climbing, sprints recovery etc etc. I do however ride for a club to let me race on a track and do go on a (not slightly club organised, just kinda happens) chain gang every Saturday.
I like both, only manage to get out with club every few weeks as have to work round family commitments.
Club runs are good fun as are changangs which I hang on to, though I also enjoy my own company on the majority of my riding.
I like club riding even though I was one of the slowest. It takes a bit of concentration when in a pack, especially at pace. Most of my training, well 99% used to be solo, so i do like my own company more.
Mostly on my own unless my brother comes over. Biggest problem is the motivation to ride just that litle bit further on the next ride. I don't mind being on my own going at my own pace which has increased slightly recently, but I'm a terrible self-motivator.
Anyone interested in starting a cycling club, just for people who like to cycle on their own?
Mostly,on my own, I quite like it but boring on long rides!
I have tried clubs and not quite for me. Simply because not fast enough for the chain gangs and too fast for the strollers ... Also frankly found them a bit cliquey for me and of course on your own you determine you own speed, route etc.
Plus I don't like to stop as it wastes time really and we all have busy lives.
