Para-cyclist Steve Bate is set to appear at Manchester based cycling retailer Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative this May, as part of a new event series taking place at the store.
In June 2013 Steve Bate became the first registered blind person to solo El Capitan in Yosemite, California. Following this, Steve trialled for the Great British Paralympic cycling squad, pedalling as a visually impaired athlete on the back of a tandem bike. The ultimate dream was to compete in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and in August 2013, he was accepted on to the British Cycling's 2016 Paralympic squad.
At the event, Steve will share what it was like to become the first visually impaired person to climb the mighty El Capitan Mountain, receive his diagnosis and where it has ultimately taken him, as well as the achievements he has made and challenges he has faced on his quest for sporting greatness.
On the night, the Hebden-Bridge based Para-cycling athlete will also be raffling off a money-can’t-buy British Cycling t-shirt for North East Sensory Services, a charity close to his heart.
The event, which will be the first in a series throughout the summer featuring ambassadors of the sport, will take place at Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative’s Manchester Rusholme store, on Wilmslow Road between 7:30pm – 9pm on Tuesday 19 May 2015 and is free to attend, but voluntary donations to North East Sensory Services are welcomed.
This summer, the Rusholme store is also due to play host to Great Manchester Cycle organiser, Jamie Still, founder of Science in Sport and Secret Nutrition, Tim Lawson, Twisted Spokes cycling lawyer, Jane Bedford-Mclaren, and Withington Wheelers captain, Amanda Philipson as part of a new series of events that is due to take place.
