Need a new Road Bike for £250 to £300 MAX

Hi Guys

Im selling my Red 2010 Carrera Virtuoso bike,  Really want a new one,  can't afford more than £350, will just be doing trips to the Gym and a couple of weekends a month cycling to keep fit lol!

I'm 6 foot 3, so what bike size would you recommend? and for my budget, what bike choices do I have?

my Carrera from new has never been great, gears dont felt right, kept on slipping, bit cheap and nasty maybe, although that cost me £329 when I bought it lol it's been serviced lots but not ridden a great deal, but getting the cycling bug now

thanks

Was gonna pop to decathlon to try out a 500SE B Twin, however after reading this comment, probably not..

Having ridden it for a couple of months the freewheel packed up about 5 miles from home. I had to call out International Rescue and put the bike in the boot of the car. Decathlon didn't have any freewheels in stock, so gave me a complete new wheel. Definitely excellent customer service. They showed me the broken freewheel which had rusted and the bearings were badly worn on the drive side. I wash my bike after every ride in the winter and am careful not to get detergent or GT85 anywhere near bearings.

After 1500 miles the gears began to skip. Measuring the chain it didn't appear unduly worn. However, the teeth on the cassette looked just like sharks teeth! My LBS replaced the cassette and chain, plus the cables.

So what's the final verdict. Overall I am happy with the Triban. I enjoy riding it and I don't worry too much it getting plastered in muck and grit. For the price it's a good buy, but don't expect the drive chain to be as durable as a more expensive bike.

Honestly, you're buying at a really bad time for this price range. These bikes have the Shimano Sora groupset which just got updated. The 2017 version of these bikes, for the same money, will be fitted with a much improved, and way better looking Sora groupset.

I know that's not helpful, but if you see a bike with Sora R3000 then that's the new version. (Sora 3500 was the old model name).

Looks like this (compare it to the groupset on the bike you just linked):

Worth checking eBay for used Giants and Cannondales. Have a go at that auction sniper Goofbid. Can offer guys to take the sale outside of eBay for a reduced figure.

B'Twin Triban 500 for £250

Go to a Decathlon and try one. They usually have lots of stock.

Have you investigated wether your employer does a cycle to work scheme? Could give you a bigger budget (though restrict source of supplier) through more flexible terms
