Bridport Trailway receives funding boost

The development of a multi-use path between Maiden Newton and Bridport has come a step closer following two donations to boost the funding for the project. Led by Sustrans, the Maiden Newton-Bridport Trailway will follow the disused route of the old Bridport branch railway, offering a 10-mile traffic-free path for the benefit of walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users.

Whilst serving two towns and several villages, the path will also act as a traffic-free gateway to the Jurassic Coast, encouraging green tourism. The Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has awarded the Trailway a grant of £5,000 from its Sustainability Development Fund, which supports projects that bring sustainable benefits to local communities.

The Trailway project has also been supported by local running club Maiden Newton Runners, which has fundraised £500 towards the development of the path. The runners raised the funds from their annual NewTen Madness event, this year sponsored by Stores of Maiden Newton.

To help raise even more funds for the development of the Trailway, Sustrans has organised a raffle to win prizes that include a Enigma Ethos road bike worth £2000, as well as vouchers up to £500 to spend in local cycle shops.

Commenting on the recent funding boost, Peter Henshaw of the Sustrans Trailway project, said: "We're delighted with the recent funding boost. We are hoping to start work on the first section before Christmas, and contributions like these really help to bring the whole project one step closer to completion. Hopefully we will receive great support through the raffle which is offering members of the local community some fantastic prizes."

Phil England, member of Maiden Newton Runners, said: "We all enjoy spending time outdoors to explore the countryside. The Trailway Path would open up a safe route for everyone to make the most of the stunning scenery on our doorstep whilst also helping to connect villages in the area."
