Lorry driver arrested following hit-and-run death of Shropshire cyclist

A lorry driver from South Wales has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death by dangerous driving of a cyclist who was found dead on the A49 in the early hours of Monday morning.

The body of Michael Saunders, aged 61, was discovered at around 5am on Monday morning between Leebotwood and Dorrington by a tractor driver. Police believe he had been struck by a vehicle which failed to stop.

The victim had been riding home to Bayston Hill from his workplace in Church Stretton.

West Mercia Police say that on Wednesday, they traced a lorry that they believe may have been involved in the incident and went to South Wales to interview the driver.

Sergeant Mike Waterworth of West Mercia Police said: “The lorry driver, a 39-year-old man, has now been formally arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“He was interviewed yesterday and given police bail while inquiries continue.”

Officers believe that the fatal collision occurred between 3.30am and 4.40am on Monday, and have renewed an appeal for anyone who may have seen Mr Saunders prior to the incident, or who has any other information, to contact Shrewsbury police station on 101, quoting the reference number 63s230614.
