John Degenkolb of Giant-Shimano has this afternoon taken his third stage of the 2014 Vuelta a Espana, winning the sprint in Logroño from Omega Pharma-Quick Step's Tom Boonen, with Astana's Jacopo Guarnieri third. Alberto Contador retains the race lead.
Approaching the flamme rouge, a big crash took down a number of riders, but with the incident happening inside the final three kilometres of the 166.4 kilometre stage which followed a flat, 20.6 kilometre circuit, none of those held up behind will lose time.
Coming into the final kilometre, Lampre-Merida's Roberto Ferrari attacked, but was unable to maintain his momentum, and it was Degenkolb - winner of a Vuelta stage the last time the race visited here in 2012 - who prevailed.
Boonen's second place may instill some confidence in the Belgian ahead of the World Championships in Ponferrada later this month, but potential rival Fabian Cancellara was also very much in the mix, finishing eighth today.
