Cycling Video round-up: Shocking driving, crashes & an equine escape

"Get in the cycle lane" says texting driver at the top of our round-up + there's a slow-mo Oz crash, and some roller abuse...

Welcome to another road.cc video round-up. The year's still young, but we've already received a number of videos of unbelievable examples of dangerous driving, ignorant and incredulous drivers, as well as cyclists disobeying pretty basic road rules.

We start the round-up with one of these ignorant drivers. One, in fact, whose disregard for other road users' safety is quite unbelievable.

He's followed by a seriously dangerous piece of driving, a cyclist-on-cyclist collision, some horsing around in Lewes, and a multi-bike pile up in the Tour Down Under beautifully slowed down.

Away from videos captured on the road, we've got a short documentary about a locally famous New York-based pizza delivery cyclist who sadly passed away this week. That video is joined by a swift and smooth rundown of how Seven Bikes are made, and a set of rollers used in a really stupid manner.

No-hands driver: “get back in cycle lane”

We've seen cyclists catch drivers out eating cereal, talking on the phone, and texting before. Action cameras have opened up the door for all sorts of vigilante road monitoring.

What's frustrating about this particular instance is the driver's supreme hypocrisy.

Mad Mini driver almost mashes cyclist

Here's a terrifying clip.

Not only does this Mini driver overtake around traffic furniture, they also go on to run a red light. Unbelievable.

CycleGaz crashes into cyclist crossing road

This pavement-riding cyclist got pretty lucky here. Fortunately for him it was only YouTube ride-recording personality Cycle Gaz who hit him as he crossed the road without looking.

If it had been anything larger we doubt he'd have been able to get away so quickly, without checking to see if Cycle Gaz, who was lying on the floor, was okay.

Lost horse on the loose in Lewes

"It's alright, I've done this a few times," said the driver in pursuit of the escaped horse that took to the streets of Lewes this week.

This video shows a cyclist's view of the chase around town. Enjoy.

Slow-mo crash from the Tour Down Under

You may have already seen this crash, especially if you’re a regular here. When we ran our story on this spectacular collision, we took Jeremy Roux’s perspective as he dodged through the mayhem.

This angle gives you a surprisingly elegant look at the carnage that the French rider miraculously avoided.

‘Wild’ Bill Meier - locally famous NYC pizza delivery cyclist - RIP

This here is a beautifully shot documentary which contains a brief look into the life and career of New York City-based pizza delivery courier Bill Meier.

Mr Meier, known by many around him as Wild Bill, was a scruffy looking bike courier, who sadly passed away this week.

Here's a brief description of the man in this video by Reddit user scoofy:

"He rode a white continuum frame that was apparently a gift from the manufacturer. He would pine about ragbrai. He'd borrow my pump far more often than he should have. He never wore a helmet. He never used brakes. He always road with one hand while carrying pizza. The only conditions he didn't ride in was hurricane sandy, because it closed the shop, anything else was fair game. I honestly don't know how he managed it."

How to make a Seven bike

This is a quick visit to the factory of Seven Cycles.

Based in Massachusetts, this is a great video that goes from early in a Seven bike's life, right up until the point that it's boxed up and ready to roll.

Man rides moped on bicycle rollers indoors

This doesn't seem like a good idea to us...

Vigilante is the right word!

Take off your cycling glasses for a second and watch what the rider in video 1 actually does. He spots that the guy in the BMW is playing with his phone, fine so far, but everything from there is stupid.

Rather than adapt his own riding style to more safely deal with that drivers failure he instead stays out on the edge of the lane, putting himself closer to the danger. He slows down, so that he can stay closer to the danger vehicle?! He spends more time looking round and looking back while trying to get more footage of his target. The combination of all this is that several obviously slower cyclists are forced to undertake him. Then he gets into completely pointless shouting match with someone who is obviously upset and is armed with several tonnes of metal.

And why does he do all this, so that he can 'undertake law enforcement without legal authority' which is exactly the definition of vigilante.

Just because you put a camera on your head and see someone else doing something stupid or illegal doesn't allow you to behave stupidly and to break the law as well.

I am getting well towards the point now that if I see a cyclist with a camera on I assume he is a troublemaker out looking to cause an incident so that he will have some good footage to upload to youtube and maybe get himself on here.

Use a dictionary, to begin with.

Hmm... given that about 1/3rd or more at the SKC vigil & die-in in Hackney last week had cameras, and of those there was a lot of diversity across both age & gender... you're simply wrong. Mine are to get objective evidence in case of issues, and give Roadsafe (mostly) and the police (at times) something to work with.

A very small minority are abrasive busybodies. But you know what? At least they don't endanger anyone, unlike those they confront.

Do you cycle in some traffic nirvana location? Or are you just so used to people driving cars & lorries endangering you that you no longer notice?

"vigilante road monitoring"

FFS, at least look up what a word means before using it. Bad sub editor, bad!

The cyclist in no.1 had no reason to challenge the driver, why not just send the video to the local police and if you have to, put on You Tube. Challenging is only going to incite the driver and potentially lead to violence. The driver knows they are wrong using their phone whether they admit it or not, but a cyclist challenging them will not change their mind. It will make them even more peed off at cyclists though.

Looks like in no.3 it was a young child that obviously did not pay attention. Might make him think twice again, but I notice he left the scene pretty quickly without checking on the other cyclist.

No. 4 well done on the cyclist for hunting down the rogue horse 1 Lewes always has strange things going on. Notice the cyclist went through a red light though at the start of the film, of course he sped that part of the film up 1

All hail the car driver! The car driver must not be challenged! So what, if the driver had become violent, that would have been the cyclist's fault? Give over.

"Action cameras have opened up the door for all sorts of vigilante road monitoring"

Having a camera on your bike is not vigilantism. As a voice for cyclists, you really should not be promoting this kind of stereotype.

A vigilante is someone who takes the law into their own hands. Recording whilst you are riding is not against the law, so you cannot be classified as a vigilante!

Anyone else think there's something just a little inconsistent in concentrating, slowing down and salivating at the "action" when it comes to spills in the pro ranks and then cringing with a frown and a shake of the head when it comes to spills from commuters?... Or am I just getting old and boring?

Seems perfectly normal behaviour to me, see similar most days.
