British Cycling has announced the long list of riders from which the squad that will contest the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia, next month will be chosen.
Lizzie Armitstead, British and Commonwealth champion, Olympic silver medallist and winner of the UCI Women World Cup last season, spearheads Great Britain’s challenge in the women’s road race, seeking to follow Beryl Burton, Mandy Jones and Nicole Cooke into the rainbow jersey.
The long list for the men’s elite road race includes two-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome, who may also feature in the time trial, an event in which he won an Olympic bronze medal at London 2012 behind Sir Bradley Wiggins.
Also named is Mark Cavendish, who in Copenhagen in 2011 became only the second British male rider to win a Road World Championship, the other being the late Tom Simpson who triumphed at San Sebastian in 1965.
UCI president Brian Cookson last year hailed the routes of the elite road races in Richmond as providing “challenging, exciting and scenic courses for the world’s best cyclists.”

Looking at the list and the course i would go for either one of the Yates brothers or Stannard. Its a long route though, 264kms.
Hannah Barnes is injured, but now not requiring surgery and may still be fit.
The Road Race will all be based around Lizzie anyway and I suspect the two TT riders will be Hayley and Molly.
Hannah said on Twitter yesterday she definitely isn't riding.

You'd think BC would have asked her and possibly added another rider to the longlist before naming her....
Is there any way Froome could win it? He's 400:1 at the moment, which suggests not but just imagine the vindication of a £5 bet!
British Cycling with their finger on the pulse as usual - Hannah Barnes is injured and won't be fit.
Congratulations to Hayley Simmonds who's had an absolutely fabulous season
If Geraint Thomas wasn't doing the Vuelta I would say he's our best bet. The course is like the Glasgow commie games course from last year. Of all the GB riders I'd say it suits G the most but will he be too tired?
Mind you the bookies are offering 100/1 on G winning the rainbow jersey. Well worth a tenner.
