Witness appeal after 10-year-old cyclist is killed in road traffic collision in West Calder

Brooke Bagley was hit on Saturday night and died in hospital on Monday

Police Scotland has named a girl killed in a road traffic collision as 10-year-old Brooke Bagley. Brooke was involved in a collision with a car in West Main Street, West Calder, on Saturday, October 31. After being taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, she died on Monday.

The BBC reports that Brooke was cycling on the A71 at Burngrange Cottages at about 6.10pm when she was struck by a black Nissan Micra. Her death has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

The driver of the car remained at the scene to speak to the emergency services, but police are appealing for witnesses.

Police Scotland released the following statement on behalf of Brooke’s family.

“Brooke was a bright and intelligent young girl who was full of life, with a large circle of friends. She will be sadly missed by us her family, her friends and all who knew her. We have been left heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Brooke. We ask for privacy at this time and the space to allow us to grieve.”

Neighbours described Brooke as a “lovely little girl” who was often seen out cycling with her friends. Peter Vincent, vice-chairman of West Calder and Harburn Community Council, said: “This is a small town and everyone will be very shocked and stunned by the news. The initial police report suggested it was serious but not life-threatening, so to find out that she has passed away, it’s absolutely horrific.”

Marie Brown, the headteacher at St Mary’s Primary, which Brooke attended, said: “Brooke was a popular primary seven pupil who set a good example for all children in the school and loved her role as a primary one buddy. She was talented at writing, photography and art work and was a very good friend to many. Brooke will be sadly missed by everyone at St Mary’s Primary School and Polbeth Nursery.”

I ride up there all the time, and my club is based there too, just a couple of hundred yards further down the road. My condolences to her family, awful news.
