Caleb Ewan takes Tour Down Under opener

Young Aussie sprinter in overall lead after Stage 1

Australian sprint sensation Caleb Ewan has won the opening stage of the Tour Down Under to take the first leader’s jersey of the opening UCI WorldTour race of 2016.

The Orica GreenEdge rider turned on the afterburners at the end of the 130.8km stage from Prospect to Lyndoch to beat Team Dimension Data’s Mark Renshaw into second place with Wouter Wippert of Cannondale third.

Ewan had won six of his previous eight races so far this year, and after his win said: "It's a really proud moment for me.

“I've never led a WorldTour race before and to lead my first one in my home country is a real honour."

It’s not the 21-year-olds first stage win in a WorldTour race, however – that came last year in the Vuelta, heralding his arrival as a sprinter able to compete at the top level.
