Milan – San Remo diverted after landslide on route

Two injured and a number of parked cars damaged

Today’s Milan – San Remo has been diverted following a landslide on the Via Aurelia. The incident, which took place at around 10.45am, saw several parked cars hit by falling rocks and two tourists injured.

The landslide occurred between Genova Voltri and Arenzano at the Pizzo tunnel. Republica.it reports that boulders fell from a height of 40m, damaging three parked cars and injuring a pair of tourists – Patrik Ngandu, 40 and Antonella Torchio, 43.

Organisers subsequently took the decision to reroute the race along the A10 highway, entering at Genova Voltri and exiting at Arenzano where it will return to the original route.

In 2014, the Milan – San Remo route had to be changed a month before the race after the newly introduced climb of the Pompeiana was made unsafe by landslides. Persistent rain in the Liguria region made the road impassable on safety grounds and the race instead reverted to a more traditional route.
