Another day, another Kickstarter campaign. Stick with us, though, this one looks quite interesting.
It’s the Atelier Cycles Custom Multi Tool. The very simple idea is that you choose what tools you want in your multi-tool, and they make it for you.
As you know if you’ve ever shopped for a multi-tool, there is so much choice that choosing the right one, with the right combination of tools, can be a nightmare. So a custom tool with all the right tool bits for your demands does sound appealing.
- The best multi tools — get the right bits to fix your bike's bits
“The idea behind Atelier Cycles' custom multi-tool is simple: we want you to have the exact tools that you need to fix your ride when you're out on the road in a neat, high-quality package. What we offer, in a word, is choice. You choose the tools you need and we assemble it for you, to order. Each tool is unique and fits your requirements without compromise.”
The idea came about when inventor Nelson Trees was riding the Transcontinental race last year and found his multi-tool was lacking the one Allen key he needed. The Custom Multi Tool is the solution, allowing anyone to choose the exact tools they need to carry out repairs on their bike.
Presuming the Kickstarter goal is reached, there’ll be a website through which you can customise and then order your own tool.
The Minimalist Package will cost £20 and offer up to 10 tools, with a chain tool costing an extra £2. The Deluxe Package will cost £30 and allows you to build a tool from the full range of tools, but you don’t have to spec them all. The tools come with a protective neoprene sleeve.
The tool options are extensive and are as follows:
- Hex Keys: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
- Torx Keys: T10, T25, T27, T30
- Screwdrivers: Phillips and Flat Head
- Chain Tool - with two common spoke wrench sizes (3.22 & 3.45) as well as a tool for Mavic nipples
- A plastic tyre lever is also in the works, and clip-on to the tool.
The tool is constructed from forged and CNC machined 7075 aluminium side plates, with forged indents on the inside face to reduce weight. The side plates are also hard anodised, with five colours to choose from. The dimensions for the tool are 76 x 14mm.
It’s not a totally unique idea. A quick Google reveals the Quirky Switch from a few years ago, but we can’t find it for sale anywhere. Atelier Cycles is hoping to achieve £7,000 of funding (currently at £899 with 26 days to go) and, providing it hits that target, will deliver the tool in June 2016.

So you cannot customise to have the correct JIS standard screwdriver to adjust the derailleurs?
