York cycle scheme causes unforeseen traffic problems

A controversial cycle scheme in York has resulted in unanticipated traffic problems, according to a report presented to city councillors.

The Water End cycle initiative included the introduction of a cycle lane at Clifton Green junction last year.

But according to the York Press, local residents are complaining that the bike lane has resulted in motorists clogging up neighbouring streets in their search for new routes.

The report, produced by a city council task group, says that traffic levels on nearby Westminster Road and The Avenue have soared, adding that “these consequences were unforeseen”.

The group has recommended that proposals are drawn up to reduce traffic levels on the neighbouring streets – but it stops short of agreeing with some residents’ desire to close the roads to traffic altogether, saying this would make congestion worse at Water End.

We’re waiting to hear back from the council about why the traffic problems weren’t foreseen – and whether one of the options being considered might be to dispose of the Clifton Green cycle lane.
