John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.
He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.
Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.
John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.
He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

Egg sandwich. Two egg omelette with chorizo and spinach for preference.
Bananas.
White bread vegemite/marmite sandwich
I like to start a longer ride with some proper savoury food and then move to the gels and other crap when things start hitting the fan.
A few mini pork pies go down lovely followed on by a jam sarnie and a banana.
At a feed stop on a sportive I did a while back I had someone trying to buy my second pork pie off me so it's not just me.
It has to be two pork pies and then a strawberry yoghurt.
Sesame snaps
Dates. Yum.
Chia Charge flapjacks. Delicious and energy boosting
Soreen malt loaf. They come in a handy, single person serving size of one loaf
Honey roast cashews.
Sugar, salt, protein, loads of energy, plus magnesium, zinc, selenium etc. Magic.
Raw energy bars - no cooking needed
I have made a couple of times and it tastes good too.
For the ultimate in simplicity, make a raw energy bar using this formula: 1/3 dates (Medjool dates work best), 1/3 dried fruit, 1/3 nuts/seeds. Mix thoroughly in a food processor, press firmly into a baking tray, refrigerate and cut into slices.

I get sick of sweet stuff pretty quickly, and I find a bit of protein helps me along better than just carbs - my new favourite is cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. Two of those and a couple of Clif Shot Bloks when I was starting to blow at the end got me through the whole of the RideLondon...
Bread pudding.
Pot noodle?
........ liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti -
Ops! - Wrong forum
Finely sliced medium-rare Chateaubriand in a sourdough roll with peppercorn sauce.
Not the easiest to eat on the move, but a gentleman should dine on nothing less.
May I ask for your recommendation of what to put in my bidon to accompany it?
A nicely aged Italian Barolo would accompany Chateaubriand rather nicely and a bottle would decant perfectly into a 750ml bidon.
Dripping sandwich.
Those energy jelly shots.
Dripping with what exactly?
Jelly babies (for same reason as Malt Loaf got another nomination... )
Fig Rolls
Bananas.
Malt loaf, as the post above has 2 products... read rules...
Do we actually need this vote? CAKE is clearly going to be the winner. Everyone knows that.
Cheese, ham and pesto pittas!
Mini Brioche rolls with jam / peanut butter and jam
Tub of maltodextrin for energy drink
Jelly Babies and Malt Loaf
Coffee and cake comes in at a stop.
