Bike thief punches County Durham cyclist in face and steals bike

Police appeal after incident in Spennymoor on evening of Saturday 13 August

Police in County Durham have issued an appeal after a man punched a cyclist in the face earlier this month and stole his bike.

Durham Constabulary say the theft happened in Spennymoor at around 11.45pm on Saturday 13 August as the victim rode home from his place of work in the town centre.

The rider had dismounted at the junction of Ullswater Close and Works Road when a man grabbed his grey Diamondback mountain bike.

The cyclist tried to keep hold of it but his assailant punched him in the face and made off with the bike, heading towards the town centre.

The suspect is described as a white male aged 20-25, around five feet seven inches tall and with a slim, athletic build.

Police say that the victim was not seriously hurt, and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Detective Constable 2102 Sunil Weerasinghe or Detective Constable 735 Bridget Westerman at Bishop Auckland CID on 101.
