London cyclist killed in HGV collision

Police have confirmed that a woman who was killed after being hit by a truck in south London yesterday was a cyclist.

The woman – who was in her 30s and believed to be Italian but who has not yet been formally identified – was hit at the junction of Lavender Hill and Elspeth Road in Wandsworth at around 8am.

Police officers, the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police could not initially say whether the victim was a pedestrian or on a bicycle. One witness told the London Evening Standard that she had been crossing the road before the collision.

The driver, thought to work for a third-party contractor for British Gypsum, stopped following the collision. Police said no arrests have been made.

The cyclist is the sixth to die on London’s roads in 2016 and the third following a collision with a lorry.
