Giro d'Italia Stage 7: Caleb Ewan takes sprint, Bob Jungels keeps lead

22-year-old Australian sprinter bags his second career Grand Tour stage win

Caleb Ewan of Orica-Scott has won Stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia in Alberobello , the second Grand Tour victory of his career.

On a day that always seemed destined to come down to a bunch sprint, the 22-year-old Australian beat Fernando Gaviria of Quick Step Floors and Bora-Hansgrohe's Sam Bennett to the line in the Puglian town.

Winner of the points classifications at the Tour de Yorkshire and the Tour Down Under this year, Ewan's previous Grand Tour stage win came at the 2015 Vuelta.

After his victory today, he said: "It feels so good after the first few disappointments I've had. I don't think I've felt so good before.

"It was a bit crazy at the end. We got caught too far back at about three kilometres to go. But we found each other. We didn't panic. The boys did a perfect job.”

Bob Jungels of Quick Step Floors keeps the overall lead on another day when there was no change at the top of the General Classification.

He said: "It was a bit crazy today but I had to ride at the front in the last ten kilometres to come home safe.

"It's not a disappointment for our team to not win with Fernando Gaviria today, because he did a great sprint and the team helped him.

"It's no shame to lose against Caleb Ewan who is very fast.”

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas is still second overall, and Adam Yates of Orica-Scott third.

Officially, 191 riders started today's 224 kilometre stage from Castrovillari, though in fact one extra cyclist joined the peloton for the neutralised section ahead of kilometre zero - the actor Patrick Dempsey, star of Grey's Anatomy and apparently a big Giro d'Italia fan, resplendent in a retro maglia rosa.
