Top artists and designers reinterpret bike helmets for charity auction

Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry is among the artists and designers who have created helmets that will be auctioned off to raise funds for the brain injury charity, Headway.

The helmets, not all of which it is fair to say comply with official safety requirements, will be on display at Look Mum No Hands on London’s Old Street from 1-7 September in an exhibition called Strike - The Helmet Project.

Here’s the helmet designed by Jake & Dinos Chapman, who shot to fame in the 1990s as part of the Young British Artists movement.

This one is from renowned milliner Stephen Jones, whose clients have included Boy George, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Kylie Minogue.

As his wife Philippa points out, it’s actually a fruit bowl that has been turned upside down, so not something you'd want to go out riding with it perched on your head, especially given that you'll need to fork out at least five grand to make it yours..

While bidding wasn’t due to open until 1 September, it seems that offers are now being lodged on Galabid for the pieces, and it is the one by Perry that has grabbed the attention so far, with a top bid to date of £5,001.
