The New Year’s honours aren’t just about political cronyism – a handful also go to non-politicians. This year round-the-world adventurer Mark Beaumont and Maindy Flyers coach, Alan Davis, are among those recognised.
The BBC reports that Beaumont will get a British Empire Medal.
The Scot completed his round-the-world ride in just 79 days to reclaim the Guinness World Record he set a decade ago.
He said: "It's an incredible surprise, as you can imagine, simply getting a letter through the post marked 'from Her Majesty's Services' saying that the hard work this year, everyone involved in the 80 Days project and all the charity work over the years is being recognised is wonderful."

He added: "My world has been turned upside down since I got back to Paris and went around the world in 80 days, and it's all been a bit of a whirlwind. So to end up in the New Year honours list is wonderful and I'm sure when the day comes it'll be one I remember for a very long time."
Davis – the first cycling coach of future champions including Elinor Barker, Owain Doull and Geraint Thomas – becomes an MBE for services to youth cycling and diversity inclusion in South Wales.
He said: "It's been very hard to keep it a secret... I'm very surprised but absolutely delighted."
He also expressed his belief that the recognition was "as much for Maindy Flyers" as it was for him.
The club tweeted: “A huge congratulations to our head coach Alan Davis for achieving an MBE in the New Year Honours. So well deserved after the time and effort he's put in over the years for so many. Everyone from the club is so proud and sends congratulations. Now what time is training today?”

You'd need some good wet weather gear for that ride too.
