Today’s near miss sees a motorist move from the right-hand lane to the left-hand lane, passing just in front of a cyclist in the middle lane in the process. Needless to say, the manoeuvre occurred immediately before the driver came to a stop at traffic lights.
Conrad Dalziel, who has submitted a video to this feature before, said the incident took place during his commute yesterday morning.
“Turning right onto the A4 from Slough High Street, I was in the left lane and both lanes turn right. Shortly after joining the A4, a left-turn only lane opens up and the lady behind me, rather than just moving into it, decided to squeeze through on the right before moving over to the left.
“She had to stop for the lights shortly afterwards and I noticed she had her window open, so I made the point of suggesting that she could have touched me if she’d been any closer. She looked surprised, so I wonder if she’d even realised what she’d just done.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

Playing devils advocate for a moment: maybe the motorist thought that she was being sensible and legal by not undertaking the cyclist (so, overtook then went back right over to the left lane); or, maybe the motorist was so fixated on the traffic lights and the cyclist further ahead that she didn’t even see the cyclist with the camera.
Or else they were just old-fashioned oblivious and incompetent.
Any way: terrible piece of driving. Unfortunately, so common a piece of driving that I doubt you’d get any more of a reaction from the police than “Meh!”
I had someone do that to me yesterday, although much closer to the lights (with advanced stop box).
I'd just started to frewheel when across comes the wing of a green Golf that had almost overtaken me in the outside lane. They did at least remember to indicate.
She got both barrels at the lights.
Yeah that's a bad one, not like there was much other traffic.
Terrible, dangerous manoeuvre. Please report to police.
Clueless fuckwit .
