Near Miss of the Day 154: Motorist passes cyclist on a roundabout

Warning: video contains a healthy amount of strong language

Today our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera comes from North Shields, where a motorist saw fit to carry out this overtaking manoeuvre on a roundabout.

The incident took place on Monday night.

The cyclist, Mark, said: “The driver didn't acknowledge me at all, even though I turned the air blue and managed to reach out and touch his car he was that close.”

He added: “Apologies for the language, I was understandably a bit perturbed by his proximity. Special mention to the white van driver for his text book over take afterwards.”

Mark hasn’t sent the footage to police on the basis that Northumbria Police called time on their close pass operation just weeks after its launch.

In the comments beneath our article on its closure, The Hoggs suggested that close pass footage could instead be submitted to Operation Dragoon, which focuses on dangerous driving.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

I see your roundabout overtake in North Shields and I raise you one on the inside in Ponteland, by none other than Mr. Alan Shearer himself.  Take it away, Alan...

Granted it's nowhere near as bad as yours, but clearly demonstrates the typical levels of bellendery we have to put with.

Mark here, the foul mouthed rider in the above video.  I had a chat with a fellow club member who is in the local police force, and they recommended sending the video in, and I've since sent the link to Operation Dragoon. I'll keep you posted if it goes any where.

Again, apologies for the language, and kudos to the white van driver.

He was 'a bit perturbed by his proximity,' like two subatomic particles; most of the time they pass without interacting, but occasionally they collide and can cause unfortunate quantum entanglement.

Just your normal everyday driving, which, until the advent of small affordable video cameras, was dismissed by drivers and the police as whingeing cyclists.  This is far too prevalent, and although many drivers are careful around cyclists, many aren't, so how do we make all of them good, or get the bad ones off the road.  I'm sure the government's inquiry into the safety of cyclists will be addressing this issue and suggesting that bad drivers are banned.  Ho, ho, ho.  They're more likely to ban bikes from the road.

I'm pretty sure the driver realised that you were there after you launched the invective attack (perfectly justified by the way) as they stayed well out afterwards.
