Cyclist sustains potential life changing injuries after being hit by driver fleeing police

Arrest made following incident connected with burglary in Leicestershire yesterday

A cyclist in Leicestershire has sustained potential life changing injuries after being hit by a driver who was fleeing from police investigating a burglary.

Officers responded to a report of a burglary at a premises on Coleman Road, North Evington, at 8.15am on Sunday 18 August, reports Leicestershire Live.

The suspect fled the scene in a car, and was subsequently involved in a collision with the cyclist and a parked car on Smith Dorrien Road.

He then abandoned the vehicle and ran away, but police later made an arrest.

A spokesman for the force said: "A 30-year-old man was detained close to the scene and has currently been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and being in charge of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs.”

The cyclist was taken to hospital, and is said to have sustained possible life changing injuries.

Since there had been contact between the suspect and police prior to the collision, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, in line with standard practice.

Anyone with information about the incident is requested to call police on 101.

Even though I might desperately want to write comments on this particular story, I would request that, as arrests have already been made, could we refrain and perhaps close this for comments.
