Mark Cavendish to ride in National Road Race Championship this month

HTC-Highroad man will also ride in Newcastle's Leazes Criterium two days earlier...

Mark Cavendish of HTC-Highroad has confirmed that he will ride this year’s national road race championships in Northumberland on Sunday 26 June, just a week before the Tour de France gets under way, and will also take part in the Leazes Criterium in Newcastle two days earlier.

Last year, Team Sky dominated the nationals, with Geraint Thomas winning from team mates Peter Kenaugh and Ian Stannard after the trio broke away from a field including the likes of Garmin’s David Millar as well as Cavendish, who was still nursing wounds received in a high-speed crash with Heinrich Haussler during the Tour of Switzerland earlier in the month.

This year’s race, based in the village of Stamfordham, will be the showpiece event of a weekend of cycling in the North East including the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge on Saturday 25 June, which will follow part of the route that Britain’s top cyclists will ride over the following day.

I think Cav might get dropped on The Ryals (25%) which aren't far from the finish. He's climbing like a bus at present. Fair play to him for doing the Crit on the friday night. That will be worth seeing.
