howies launch new Cycle Range

Long and short sleeve jerseys and bib shorts the latest cycling-specific clothing from Welsh clothing brand

Welsh clothing brand howies (it's a deliberate lower case 'h' by the way) are returning to their cycling roots and have launched a new cycle range. We saw the Brenin, a cycling-specific jacket that signalled a return to their founding principles, just before the winter and as we head into spring they’ve released two new jerseys - long and short sleeve - plus their first ever padded bib shorts.

Fit has been at the forefront of these three new garments and they’ve used a seamless circular knit technology - specialist machines that knit yarn into a single continuous tube shape - that basically minimises the need for seams. As anyone knows, badly placed seams can contribute to discomfort when riding. And nothing ruins a ride quite like discomfort caused by clothing. Pain in the legs, that's another matter...

This reduction of seams to produce one-piece body panels should reduce the potential for chafing and irritation when pedalling along, as useful for the short ride to the shops as for longer rides into the country lanes. No one likes chafing, and anything to reduce it is to be welcomed.

The circular knitting machines are capable even of adjusting the patterns so howies can produce different weaves in key areas on the same panel. This allows them to incorporate lighter breathable panels in areas prone to higher perspiration, the underarms and back. And they can increase the compression and stretch of the fabric where they need higher tension, such as the hems and where it’s necessary to give a good fit. And all without separate panels and extra seams.

They have three garments in their Cycle Range, the Slipstream SS Jersey (£49), Slipstream LS Jersey (£59) and the Leadout Bibshorts (£59), that each make full use of this technology.

With a chill still in the air, the Slipstream Long sleeve Jersey is the perfect accompaniment. It’s a smart looking top with a full-length zip and breathable panels in key areas. It’s constructed from a fabric that is 96% Polyamide and 4% Elastane, and is fast wicking and breathable. There’s two cargo pockets around the back and one zipped pocket with reflective detailing around the zip.

The hem and cuffs are ribbed and there’s a long toggle puller on the zip. It’s available in three sizes, small, medium and large.

The Slipstream short sleeve Jersey is essentially the same as the long sleeve variant, with the same fabric used. It has short sleeves, obviously, and a half-length zip opening.

There’s the same three pocket and reflective details around the back. Ideal for warmer days.

The Leadout bib shorts use the same seamless knitting technology, and howies describe the fit as ‘contoured and second skin like.’ Inside is a high density foam insert with an antibacterial finish.

There’s a race radio pocket and the 96% Polyamide and 4% Elastane fabric is high wicking.

For the record, I now have a pair of the shorts and they are just as nice as they look in the pictures above. Seem very well put together. Fit is spot on and glovelike (same size as fits me for Rapha and dhb bibs). The material does feel thicker than other bibs I have, and the straps are mostly made of the regular weave rather than the more open weave, so I wonder if they will be the bib of choice if we ever have a hot summer's day, but for most of the year, that won't be an issue.

initial pad impressions are good too, so although I haven't gone for the full 5hr test of truth yet, I would be surprised if they give any problems.

For the price they are totally awesome.

@Gizmo_

Being a small company and with this being our first cycle range, we went with just one colour and kept the range small.

This also governed the sizes this time around. We're hoping to expand the range for Autumn and will be looking to do more sizes as well as women's.

Is there any reason why the jerseys aren't available in XL? It's not so much for the beer gut as the chest size - I'm 42" when I breathe in deeply...

The pad is manufactured by TMF in Italy and is from their professional range.

It's a multi-level, seamless pad with elastic side flaps to move with your body along with rapid sweat absorption and a quick-drying antibacterial finish.

We'll be adding images and more details to the product page soon.

Looks nice and if the pad is decent then £59 seems pretty fair for the bib-shorts.

Shorts are supposed to be black. Fingers crossed they have some non-Henry-Ford-inspired colours up (on?) their sleeves for the tops. But please not fluoro either - the choice of "stealth ninja" or "80s clubber" colour schemes for road cyclists, with nothing in between, is getting a bit tedious.

I actually enquired (to Howies) who was producing the insert ad was told,

"With regards to the pad, it was sourced from a pad specialist and we'll be posting more photos and details on the site shortly. This wasn't ready in time for the launch.

You may be interested to know that the actual price of the bib shorts is £59 – unfortunately we had a glitch on the website which has now been fixed to reflect the new price."

So that covers the pricing issue also, I enquired as I wouldn't be spending the previously stated £79 on te Bibs without knowing what the pad inside was.

I love Howies stuff personally and will be interested to see what the "in use" reviews are like when they start appearing.

Have to say, I am rather interested in the shorts- would be nice to know what the insert is as well- as black is just fine for them. The only colour even. The tops? Colour would be nice.

I've had the crank hoodie for a while (great, by the way) but always wondered why they hadn't produced any serious on the bike gear. Fairly decently priced as well.

Would the Race Radio pocket fit a phone?

Or a multi-tool?

I'm assuming that if you purchase the bib shorts you're not actually entering in to a contract with howies that stipulates the race radio pocket can only be used for the purpose of holding a race radio.

The Leadout Bibshorts seem to be £59.00 according to their website (not £79).

Thanks @jimmythecuckoo,

We bill the pocket on our site with "Race radio pocket (in case you turn pro)".

It's simply there if you need it.

Very nice although a radio pocket might be a feature too far for most of us 1
