Bradley Wiggins' wife knocked off her bike

She avoids serious injury

The wife of Team GB and Garmin-Slipstream star Bradley Wiggins has been knocked off her bike and has vowed to stay off the road bike from now on. "Stopped at a T junction and was knocked down from behind", she reported on micro-blogging site Twitter yesterday. "Bloke said 'sorry, didnt see you, and anyway I'd nearly stopped didn't hit you that hard.' erm, well...my bent bike and the fact that I can barely bloody move says otherwise. and I feel very,very lucky! No more road bikefor this girl, never, ever."

Olympic gold medallist Wiggins tweeted about the incident, too: “@cathwiggins got knocked off her bike today by some silly old sod going to the garden center, Very Pissed Off!!!

The accident comes after both Cath and Bradley Wiggins reacted furiously to an article by TV chef James Martin in the Mail on Sunday. In a motoring review last week on the Tesla Roadster Martin told how he terrified a group of cyclists on a country road by honking his horn at them.

The article prompted Wiggins to tweet about it: “Everyone check out on the web what JAMES MARTIN, TV chef thinks about the thousands of cyclists that enjoy riding bikes around the lanes.” Martin later apologised for causing offence. Cath Wiggins responded to a joke suggestion that Martin was the driver of the car: "no, not him, an old bloke", she tweeted

Last year, 115 cyclists were killed on Britain's roads and the accident comes as proposals are being put forward to shift the blame for accidents involving cycles towards car drivers. The CTC have also recently launched a campaign to highlight the promlem of "SMIDSY" (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) drivers.

hope you reported him for assault. sounds like a bad week though. haven't had much anger directed at me in the last few weeks. plenty of incompetence though 1

some bloke shouted at me out of a van on sunday. don't know why they bother: as usual, all i heard was "WEUUURGH" - is that an insult or a compliment?

I love the WEUUURGH thing, as I wrote about on here before, I have had a few of these incidents, and have twice now managed to catch up with the shouter some distance later, racing past their window and belowing WEUUURGH at the top of my voice very close to them. The builder in the passenger side of a van who spilt his coffee was the crowning moment, I nearly fell off, I was laughing so much

Having had 2 near misses last week with a large truck shaving my head by about 1cm, i'm also seriously thinking about giving up riding/commuting by bike. The final straw came when I was punched off my bike by a lunatic who was having an argument with another cyclist who rode off and needed to vent his road rage on someone/something.

Friends last week were hit by a half drunk can of lager from "van man" and sadly one young lady (28) was killed by am articulated lorry.

Admittedly, i ride in London and not the leafy lanes of the countryside but it's just getting too dangerous out there. I love my bike and have a passion for riding but i also value my life and the equation is starting not to balance. It may be the gym for spinning classes and week-end group rides only.

not wishing to belittle Mrs Wiggins (she should have a pie shop!), but if it was my wife that got knocked off her bike then i doubt it'd make it to the pages of road.cc. It's dreadful that she got hit. but it's only news because she's wiggo's other half.

Don't give up cycling on the roads Cath! That's what the b******s want.

And road.cc - can't you find a picture of Cath Wiggins to accompany this article and find a better way of describing her than 'wife of ... Bradley'?!

Eye tests should be compulsory for any car driver involved in an accident. The statistics on drivers with poor eyeseight are frightening.

Not enough. Re-test - I mean the driving test, at their own cost.

Drivers in this country need a wake-up call. They need reminding that 2 tonnes of metal box can be lethal. SMIDSY isn't good enough, it's an admission that they were driving without due care and attention. Too many of them are more worried about saving 20 seconds by skimming past a cyclist than whether that person's life is threatened by their impatience.

Cath should report it to the police and make sure the driver (or his insurance company) pay to replace her bike.

Yes, I drive, have done for 25 years, but I try not to be complacent.
