Near Miss of the Day 712: Driver overtakes cyclist at entrance to narrow bridge ... and saves two seconds

Our regular series featuring close passes from around the country - today it's Cornwall...

A dangerous overtake at the entrance to a narrow bridge features in our latest Near Miss of the Day video, with the driver immediately turning left afterwards meaning that they risked hitting the cyclist all for the sake of saving a couple of seconds.

It took place in Gunnislake, Cornwall, with the road.cc reader who submitted the footage, and who asked to remain anonymous, telling us: “As you can see from the footage I was mildly inconveniencing a BMW driver, who managed to save two seconds by performing a dangerous overtake before being held up by the LGV ahead.

“Over the parapet of the bridge is a large drop into the river Tamar below. Devon & Cornwall Police took unspecified action against the driver who co-operated with them after the registered keeper identified him,” added the cyclist, who passed on his thanks to the force’s Operation Snap team.

The footage is accompanied by the opening of Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, which we are told helps cover up some perfectly understandable industrial-level swearing.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

They didn't turn off the road, they were gunning for a shortcut to head-off the lorry! Having looked at the map of the area, there's a one-way singletrack road that is a shortcut. I bet they thought the cyclist might go up that road, so pushed in front so they could race up it unimpeded. Something to watch out for at that location, as I bet they're not the only driver to do that!

Disgusting impatience, I hope the police action was points and a fine.

You're right that the left turn is a bit of a rat run, about 80% of cars use it to get in front of traffic using the main road. I hope one day they will stick a bollard in the middle halfway up to solve the problem.

More likely the driver thought he'd lose roadspace to the truck if he stayed behind the cyclist so the shortcut wouldn't get him back out in front of the truck.

If only foresight was as good as hindsight - the cyclist could have taken the full bridge in primary at walking pace so both he and the BMW driver could relish the views along the Tamar valley - very relaxing....

I wonder if the driver of the BMW had even noticed that the cyclist was there...

I was thinking "Don't get too close to the lorry, if you cannot see the mirrors then the driver cannot see you". Plus, getting too close reduces your own forward vision.

And then bollocks for brains in the BMW does that!!!

I hope that whoever was behind the wheel got far more than a stiff letter from the constabulary.

I'll break my resolution to ignore your drivel just this once to tell you that Mozart was born in Salzburg. Don't try to be clever or indeed funny; as you prove multiple times a day (since returning from your ban), it's not your thing.

And Salzburg wasn't then part of anything that might be called Austria. It was actually part of the Bavarian circle of the Holy Roman Empire.

And once again (as if any more evidence is required) The Village Idiot demonstrates his / its ignorance. Vienna. LOL. He / it tries to demonstrate sophistication and then writes that Mozart was born in Vienna. What an idiot.

There's a factual inaccuracy in this item (repeated three times). There's no way they saved as much as two seconds.

"unspecified action" = Driver advised to check for cameras before doing this again.

Not sure about the musical addition. Could see some seriously competitive choices happening in future submissions.

BMW driver was in a right rush. Definitely not a safe driver. Pity that Devon & Cornwall Police don't want to give any more information.

That's a shocker!  I was thinking it must have been another bridge further up the road, there was NO room  for another vehicle to get in there.  How wrong I was.  Not surprising to see a Black BMW SUV...

Awful pass.

But I like the addition of the music - more of that, please.

I can't read that without it being to the tune of the old Club adverts.

No reason except that I think it's a great line that a stand-up friend of mine came up with: "If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, have a chocolate biscuit. I see no reason to institute a membership-based system."
