I can think of various areas of the UK where you could combine some great roads with some fanatastic fire roads and double track to really open up a whole load of new medium and long distance route options.

Neither particularly well.

But it depends what you are after. You will be slower on the road on a "gravel" bike (I hate that term) that is set up to manage any off road. Wider, fatter tyres - often with knobbies - run soft are slower than a road tyre. And you will be slower off road (other than on fire roads/double track, where in fairness you might be faster) on a "gravel" bike than a mountain bike. But if your idea of fun is doing both on the same route, then maybe you'll have more fun on a "gravel" bike, even though you may not go as fast on either individual segment. And in the end isn't it all about having fun?
