Hunt quietly debuted its brand new 650b AdventureCarbon Disc wheels at the London Bike Show last week, fitted to the brand new Bowman Pilgrims Disc which you can read all about here in our highlights article from the show.
The new wheels are not the company’s first venture into the increasingly popular 650b wheel size, a hit with adventure cyclists wanting to take advantage of the bigger tyre volume for increased comfort over all sorts of terrain, but is its first 650b carbon offering.
- The 650B alternative: Is this smaller wheel size right for you?
The AdventureCarbon Disc wheelset costs £879 and weighs a claimed 1,425g. The all-carbon rim measures 30mm wide externally and 24mm internally, making them ideal for use with wide tyres, between 28 and 55mm according to Hunt. The rim is made from unidirectional T24/30 carbon fibre with 3K reinforced spoke holes. It’s a hookless tubeless design with H-lock rim shoulders for easier tubeless inflation.
The rims are laced to Hunt’s proven 4SeasonDisc hubs with adapters for all axle configurations, and centrelock disc mounts with 6-bolt adapters included. Spokes are J-Bend Aero Butted with 28 front and rear using a 2-cross lacing pattern. Brass nipples are used for their anti-corrosion properties and finished in black.
Maximum tyre pressures are provided for various tyre width, they are 50psi for a 38mm tyre, 45psi for a 45mm tyre and 40psi for a 45mm+ tyre.
Hunt reminds us that a 650b wheel with a 50mm wide tyre has roughly the same outside diameter as a 700c wheel with a 28mm tyre, meaning the geometry of the bike isn’t going to be impacted too much and the handling should be largely the same, other than the differences in weight.
Hunt has also launched the Mason x Hunt 650b AdventureDynamo disc wheelset, costing £499 with a SONdelux dynamo hub built into the front wheel and using 25mm wide aluminium rims laced to a 4Season Disc rear hub. Claimed weight is 1,821g. You can buy just the front and rear wheels separately for £339 and £199 respectively.

The guys at Hunt are certainly keeping themselves busy at the moment, as not only have they just launched new carbon 650b wheels, but they also developing new aerodynamic wheels as well. Mat tagged along with them on a wind tunnel test session recently, and you can read all about that here.

I love how wannabe racer reviewers talk about fork flex under braking like their tyres are made of glue. I find traction gives long before fork flex.
