It was in September 2023 when we found out that AG2R would be riding Van Rysel bikes in 2024, and a little later the news was officially confirmed as Van Rysel was announced as the team's title sponsor. It was also revealed that team bikes and kit would be made available to buy on the Decathlon website, which we reported in the first publishing of this article... and it appears numerous cyclists with £9,000 to spare were very, very tempted, because the team edition replica of Van Rysel's RCR Pro has reportedly sold out within minutes of being made available to pre-order on the French sporting retail giant's website.
Going up for pre-order earlier today at 10am BST, the RCR Pro is the flagship aero road bike from the range that Van Rysel announced a year ago.
Van Rysel replicated the pro team version of The RCR Pro for Sunday club riders like you and me, if you had the funds to invest (we say 'had', because they're all gone at the time of writing).
The bike, which we're told is the pinnacle of the brand's aerodynamic engineering with especially lightweight construction, has been developed in collaboration with ONERA, the esteemed French aerospace laboratory, and constructed with 'Super High Mod Carbon'. It boasts head tube stiffness that surpasses its predecessor, and supposedly, it is very aero outside the wind tunnels too, as Benoît Cosnefroy from Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale says:
"It's very aerodynamic. It sends speed straight back without needing too much effort. The bike remains the centrepiece of our equipment, and in today's cycling landscape where average speeds often exceed 50 km/h, aerodynamics are paramount."
As a testament to its speed, Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale now boasts sixteen victories at the top-level races. With that, Van Rysel has quite effectively eradicated the doubts some might have had about its entry back into the professional peloton - the last time Decathlon sponsored a pro team was in the mid-2000s.

"This bike has already proven its mettle with the riders of the Decathlon - AG2R La Mondiale team, garnering excellent feedback. We are confident that this machine is poised to dominate the victory podium," Jérémie Debeuf, product manager at Van Rysel, said.
In terms of the spec, the replica comes equipped Shimano Dura-Ace R9270 electronic groupset, paired with a power meter. The integrated cockpit and seatpost are both carbon, and the saddle is the Fizik Vento Argo 00.
The wheels are Swiss Side Hadron Ultimate 500s wrapped in Continental GP5000 tyres. There are four frame sizes to choose from: XS, S, M and L. Each one of those comes with a size-specific stem and crank length.
The bike was available for pre-order starting today, Tuesday 16 April, and as we've mentioned it sold out within minutes of being put up on the Decathlon website. Priced at £9,000, it's certainly not cheap, but it's nowhere near making its way onto our recently refreshed list of the most expensive road bikes... what a bargain for those lucky few who managed to nab one, then!
If you missed out, the RCR Pro is available in two standard colourways: black or mahogany brown, priced at £5,500 with Shimano Ultegra Di2 or SRAM Force AXS groupsets.

I'm really curious as to how many bikes were actually available; there can't be that many people out there ready to pull the trigger on a £9000 purchase on a bike they haven't even seen, surely?
Yeah, clever marketing I expect. Keep numbers low so you can sell out; demonstrating the desirability and increasing sales of the RCR Pro.
I really hoped they would offer a version with Ultegra and a mid-range DT Swiss carbon wheelset, and genuinely bring the high end back to the masses.
It's only 5 years ago that 7.5k would get you a protour bike.
And in 2021 I paid 6500 for the Bianchi that Roglic won the 2019 Vuelta on, but with Sram Force groupset.
As to the bike design itself - Cosnefroy is correct that aero matters when riding average speeds of 50,55km/h in the pro peloton... Riding your weekly at 27km/h probably not so much...
It's £5500 with Ultregra Di2 & 36mm Shimano carbon wheels. Sram Force etap is the same price with Zipp wheelset. Same frame as the pro level bike. Rival etap version has a lower grade carbon frame.
£5500 is same price as the equivalent 2020 Trek Madone (SL7) which is now about 50% more. Hopefully this will drive stupid prices down a bit, I applaud it even though its still a lot of dosh. Still, can you put a price on enjoyment?
It's already cheap and there will likely be a cheaper version with lower modulus carbon in the future. And aerodynamics is nearly always a factor. Whether you care or not is a personal choice.
*I'm blown away anyone would pay for a Bianchi😂
The have 2 frames already, there is an Ultegra version with the same pro frame and lower versions (in sram Force I think) with a lower module frame.
With the same pro frame they do offer a version on Ultegra (with either Ultegra wheels or Swiss Side wheels) for 5k. To me this si the best choice if you consider you may have to replace the saddle, cockpit and maybe already have high end wheels.
'Pre order' - What a stupid phrase. What's wrong with 'order' ?
Is this a thoughtful invention introduced by those who were far-sighted enough to predict the future - now present - in which The Algorithm orders stuff for you, before you knew you wanted it?
"I was just going to pull the trigger on a new Specialized Sirrus 2 when a delivery arrived with two Van Rysel RCR PRO Teams, a set of tyres for a 3 inch fat bike wheel and a biopace chainring with a set of L-shaped cranks! Amazing!"
Nothing, except that it means something different. See Webster:
preorder
verb
....
to order (something) in advance : to request to purchase (something) before it is available for sale
Where does that headline about 'cheapest' bike in the pro peloton come from. It's not backed up in the story - it's not even mentioned. Off the top of my head, I'd imagine some of the Canyons are cheaper.
Terrible click bait journalism.
The bike itself look pretty good..
Aeroad with DA is 9500 euros, so there's not a lot in it.
I don't think they are when specced with Dura-ace etc.
VDPs setup is 10 grand.
It's the cheapest bike. Not sure what's confusing you?
Hmm. Wonder if they'd do a Campag rim brake version? I'd be in.
Preferably with mechanical gears.
I would.
Yes. Very tasty indeed.
