I caught a guy on a cannondale going uphill on the Africabike the other day... was quite pleased with myself till i looked round and saw he was about 70. still, that's better than being overtaken by a 70-year-old on a tourer whilst riding a BMC, as happened to me on the Dunkery Dash
This is all theoretical as far as I'm concerned - I don't think I've ever caught anybody
On the other hand I am with Dasy about not wanting to be sociable - unless I go out with a group I'm out riding for a bit of peace and quiet.
If I'm gaining on someone, I back off slightly to ensure I have a higher level should the victim...errr...cyclist try to jump on the back and get a free draft. As I pass I say hi, and then pick up the pace. I never want to be sociable.
My comeupance came this weekend, when 5 miles from home after 95 windy solo miles I came to a junction at the same time as a group of roadies swinging in from the other direction. I was planning on very gently rolling home the last 5 miles, but instead ended up trying my hardest to drop a line of guys intent on sitting on my wheel! I should have just let them go past, but something inside stops me doing that.
I don't - I greet them as I pass, and if they don't seem inclined to converse, I continue at the speed I was intending to reach, personally.
