I ended up with Shimano R170 in a size 50 (wide). Turns out Shimano are pretty much the only shoe that fit me.
At one point I had about £800 in shoes that I'd ordered to try on and we're waiting to be returned.
I'm probably going to be going through the same dance again next spring. I think i'll just go straight for whatever Shimano's second best shoe is and save myself the stress.
Holy thread resurrection batman
What did you end up with?
Bont A3's come in nicely under your budget and are great shoes - search for the road.cc review from a few months ago. Heat moldable so will fit well, and any dealer should be able to order in the size you need quickly.
Check out Lake shoes. Carbon soles, full leather, Boa closures. Great wide fitting shoes. In budget.
I bought a pair of Sidi Genius Pro 5 MEGA from Winstanleys - the Mega means Wide. In reality it means that if you are a 44 in Specialised, the 44 Mega comes up about the same but a tiny bit wider. The non mega come up about a size smaller than the Specialised and are a bit pinchy. I feel like that demented lady off Sex in the City in them - they are very lovely!
I actually have a pair of Giro Trans HV (size 48) sat next to me in a box, ready to be returned to Evans. They are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for but they're too small.
I have just tried out a pair of Giro Trans - which tick all the boxes for being black and classy; comfy too - I flap about with size 12's in a size 47, so couldn't say if their biggest at 48 would be large enough.
i am UK size 12 and Specialized shoes have always been good for me. Though i would advise going to a shop and trying them on, as their sizing is a little out, i have one pair of 47 and one pair of 46 and they both fit well.. Also worth getting a pair of their footbeds as the standard one does not give much support
Have you tried Specialized, I have pretty big feed (quite wide) and mine fit nicely. Looks like they go up to 49 in commonly available sizes, I don't recall mine coming up small so worth a try at a LBS
Somebody on Google+ just pointed me at these: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Specialized-BG-Pro-Road-Shoe_40222.htm which look like they could be just right.
