Monte Carlo or Bust - 10 days, 10 metric centuries

'Tis the season for some folly...

Everyone, including some wonderful road.cc readers, was so generous last year in supporting our Christmas Day 200 mile lockdown ride in aid of Toilet Twinning, which raised enough funds for 24 facilities, I started thinking about what we might do if locked down again this Christmas...then I thought lockdown or not, why not? So from December 14th-23rd I shall be (virtually) riding "Monte Carlo or Bust", the 1026 kilometres from our house in Peckham to Monte Carlo, ten metric centuries (and a little more) in ten days. If you'd like to support this amazing charity (and incidentally put me through a world of pain, surely worth the price of admission on its own?) in building facilities for some of the poorest two billion people in the world who have no access to clean, safe toilets, anything at all you can sponsor would be so massively appreciated and do so much good. Thank you! xxx

P.S. In the spirit of putting my money where my mouth is, I've put in the price of the first toilet myself, so I shall damned well make sure I do what I've paid for!

Good luck tomorrow Rendel (and for all those days stretching out into the middle distance). Hope you can feel a virtual tailwind of support from here - you are doing an excellent thing.

Thank you very much - yes the support from you guys is so much appreciated and worth an extra 30 watts minimum I reckon!

Final warmup today (ebike tomorrow and Monday to keep legs ticking over but fresh) 50kms @30.5kph. Legs feeling good - mind and lungs could do with some help but one out of three...

Updates here and on Twitter from Tuesday morning.

Many thanks again for all those who've been so generous, plenty of room for anyone who'd like to join in!

So I see you're just trolling now:

  • Tri-bars
  • Not in primary position
  • Failing to set an example by running daytime lights
  • Insufficient sock height

All black kit too and on the wrong side of the road for the UK - (TT) danger could be my middle name (only it's not, it's John...).

Got to fix the socks though.

Anything to oblige generous sponsors - I didn't realise there was a sock height adjustment option but now I do, long socks are now present and correct!

Ebike ??
I think I am supposed to write some offensive comments now about how you can't go more than 25 kph, and that you are a lazy, fat bastard.
I mean, that's what normal people put surely ?

Pretty much taken as read!

Just for interest for the ebike haters (not you!), yesterday Mrs H and I did 49kms on ours to visit my dad: looking at the stats afterwards, for 31kms of that I was "overpowering" the motor, i.e. riding faster than the 25kph cutoff so going completely under my own steam.

This is so easy... so #1 clearly you'd never have got up to 25kph in the first place without the motor and #2 above the limit? Dangerously fast!

Glad to see that all this electrical / electronic cycling is not just "selfish pleasure" but also enables maintaining social links. (Not a surprise to me.)

Update: after just five days the total with GiftAid has now reached bang on £1000, a magnificent total already and in no small part due to the amazing generosity of road.cc readers, thank you all so much for your support!

Plenty of time for anyone else who would like to contribute of course, won't be finished until December 23rd...

For these multi-day things isn't it the done thing to throw in some "Easter eggs" (*-*) for your audience to keep the interest? How about a santa suit at some point, or "no saddle" for day 10?

I'll see if A&E will let me stream live from the oxygen tent Day 8!

A massive thank you to everyone who's donated thus far, already up to £545 and I haven't even sent out the appeal to friends and family yet! Over £300 (I suspect a bit more as there are a couple of anons as well) has come from road.cc readers, you are the business, thank you so much!

Gave the legs a test today, not too bad though ten days in a row will take some doing (for me, I know there will be some on here who think 100km a day is nothing but they're probably not 53!), as much on the mental as physical side; 3.5 hours on the trainer can get pretty dull. Spotify and podcasts of In Our Time will play a crucial role!

Definitely a mental challenge! Multi-day things are different.

You could always pop on here from time to time and re-read some of your classic ding-dongs with certain posters to give you an anger energy boost if flagging. Maybe you could even invite them along? Some of them have posted their figures so they should be able to keep up...

Good idea - trollsters, I'll definitely be flagging come day 5 so if you could be really annoying around the 19th I could do with the adrenaline boost...

Two really generous donations from road.cc readers already, thank you so much guys (not naming in case you don't want to be identified but you know who you are!). On £280 aready after 12 hours so looking very promising, that's nearly five facilities already.

Good challenge! It's an important and often overlooked cause too. As is wittily written (in Rose George's "The Big Necessity" - a good stocking-filler) charities can get celebrities to front campaigns to provide safe water - but not so much on keeping excrement out of the water, a major cause of disease. To be fair WaterAid is much more explicit about that now. If interested check out the World Toilet Organisation (WTO...) too.
