Trailers

I'm thinking about getting a trailer for grocery shopping (doesn't need to hold kids or pets and to be towed behind my ebike) and I'm after advice:

I see that there appears to be 2 main types of coupling ... Seat post or nearside frame.

1. Can the frame mount be used with my existing thru axle, or would I need to get longer ones?

2. I currently have to change wheels when I swap from road to gravel riding; will a frame mount complicate this?

3. What is the benefits of seat post over frame and vice versa?

4. Are two wheeler trailers better than a single wheel for road use?

Any advice or info gratefully received.

My HOMCOM one came with this mount. The bit I've marked with the arrow attaches to the rear axle, and the trailer attaches to the other bit. My bike has quick-release wheels so not too sure about thru axles.

I got a frame mount trailer because I thought a seat post mount would limit what I could put on the bike's rear rack.

Other advice - you may be able to find a cheap trailer 2nd-hand. Nextdoor / Facebook groups are probably the best place to look as it's usually a "pick it up in person" deal.

1 Robert axle project and sjs cycles.
There is a wizard that tells you what you need.
https://robertaxleproject.com/axle-finder-2/

2 frame mount is normally axle mount ( so I hope we mean the same thing). The hitch fits onto the new axle and has a locknut. Once fixed on, you can remove the through axle as normal ( unless your bloody rack gets in the way !!!)
Unless your axle spec is identical, you will need 2 axles

3 I did hire a seat post one and did not like it. It seemed to spring back and forth and drag a lot. Must be incompatible with carbon post.
Lower to the ground axle would seem more stable and easier to manoeuvre due to ball and socket joint or cheapo big spring. Definitely less drag.

4 single one will be narrower if you need to go through a gate or anti motorbike gate.
2 wheels must be more stable.

I know captain badger and wtjs have a trailer and at least one of them has a single wheel yak.

I have a cheapo one same as tom_77:
"I've had my eBike for about a year, recently bought a trailer for it so I can do the weekly shop with it.

Bike is a Raleigh Motus, trailer is a HOMCOM cargo trailer."
If you do newest first on this thread, page2, you will see his photos.

Thanks Tom.
It was the rear view you posted that got me thinking again of a trailer.

@tom_77

I have a couple of crates that I use when shopping with the car.
Will these be able to fit in your trailer and be secured?

Length 590 X w 385 X h320 each unit

The internal area is approx 53 cm wide by 67 cm long. Height with the cover on is about 36 cm.

I use a couple of large Ikea bags along with a few reusable supermarket bags, take the cover off and stick a cargo net over the top.

Magic, thanks Tom.
Bit too small to get both in.

Our normal most of the week shop pretty much fits in these crates, so if I'm able to use them, it'll make life easier 1

Don't want to be in a situation where I've brought too much and can't get it back home 😂
