vuelta-esp-logo-300x168Vuelta Stage 5: John Degenkolb takes second successive stage
Giant-Shimano's John Degenkolb has taken his second successive stage win in the 2014 Vuelta - and the seventh of his career - after beating FDJ.fr's Nacer Bouhanni to the line on Ronda this afternoon, with Moreno Hofland of Belkin third. Orica-GreenEdge's Michael Matthews finished 11th and retains the race lead.
Bouhanni remonstrated with Degenkolb as they crossed the line, the German appearing to drift slightly across him as they sprinted for the win, with the FDJ.fr rider unable to find a way through on the right.
Earlier on in the 180km stage from Priego de Cordoba, Tinkoff-Saxo managed to split the peloton as the wind caused echelons to form, with riders distanced including Garmin-Sharp's Dan Martin, but the two main groups including all the overall contenders came back together with more than 20km left to ride.
