There is a lot of choice in the carbon fibre clincher wheel market, and now you can add Scope Cycling to the shortlist. Scope Cycling are a Dutch brand and they’ve spent the past two years developing their own carbon fibre clincher wheelset, with three models available. They'll cost £1,199 a set.
Scope are offering three carbon fibre clincher wheels in a choice of rim depths, and they cost £1,199 each. The R3C features a 35mm rim and weighs a claimed 1,380g, the R4C use a 45mm deep rim and weigh 1,465g, and R5C get a 55mm rim and weigh a claimed 1,555g. All of those weights are on the money and competitive with other wheels at this sort or price.
The rims are manufactured from unidirectional carbon fibre with 3K carbon used in key areas, such such as the tyre bed and around the spoke nipples. The braking surface is made with some special fibre and resin which the company claims can handle braking power of 1300W without causing any heat-related issues.
They’re on-trend with their width too, being 24mm wide. Most wheel manufacturers are slowly moving to wider rims, for better aerodynamics on deep section rims like these and for better compatibility with the popularity for wider tyres.
Not content with using an aftermarket hub, Scope have also developed their own hub, as they were keen to develop the whole wheelset as a complete system. The rear hub features a reinforced 7075 aluminium freehub body to prevent the cassette biting into the slotted grooves, and is available in Shimano and Campagnolo versions. The hubs have widely spaced flanges with the idea to create a more laterally stiff wheelset, and they’ve used a 2:1 spoke lacing pattern on the rear wheel, similar to Campagnolo. They’ve used Sapim CX Ray spokes throughout.
Spoke Cycling wheels are coming to the UK soon, Oneway Distribution will be distributing them in the UK, (that's the sister company of Oneway Bikes which distributes Cube over here), and we’ve got a set coming in for test very soon. There’s a lot of competition at this price, so close to a grand, and it’s certainly hotting up with ever more choice. On the surface these wheels look a really good package with a wide rim profile and choice of depths, and their own hubs.
