Record numbers of people are expected to ride the new eight-mile circuit that will be used for the Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle on Saturday August 1. As well as passing London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral, this year’s route also goes south of the river with a loop over Waterloo Bridge.
Free registration for the FreeCycle is now open with 70,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities expected to take part. The London Cycling Campaign will also be leading rides from 30 London boroughs, which will allow people to cycle from home to join the route in the centre of London. There will then be return led rides at the end of the day.
Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface at TfL, said:
“One of the best ways to travel in London is by bike. During Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle everybody will have the chance to ride on miles of traffic-free roads. We’re sure that after experiencing the buzz of being on a bicycle, a new group of cyclists will soon make use of our new and upgraded segregated Cycle Superhighways.”
The FreeCycle event will also feature six Festival Zones – one more than last year. These will be located at Green Park, St Paul’s churchyard, Guildhall Yard, Leadenhall Market, Aldwych and Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Each Festival Zone will provide cycle-themed entertainment and secure cycle parking for participants.
The entertainment on offer will include stunt cyclists and unicyclists, a short mountain bike course, penny farthing polo, a pedal-powered juice bar, cycle Scalextric and plenty more. Full details of what’s on offer at each Festival Zone can be found here.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
"This year's Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle is gearing up to be an amazing day out, packed full of bike-based entertainment for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. There can be no better way to see the sights of our great city than by taking a trip on two wheels at your own pace and in the company of family and friends.”
FreeCycle is one of a number of events comprising Prudential RideLondon, an annual two-day festival of cycling. The weekend will also include criterium racing, the Brompton World Championship Final, the RideLondon-Surrey 100 sportive and the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix.
