Hounslow road race could be lost after organiser's retirement

Wheelers event takes place this Sunday - for the last time?

A popular road race in Hounslow is under threat as its organiser prepares to retire.

Jeff Marshall has organised more than half of all the editions of the  Peter Young Memorial Road Race which has been going since 1971.

But unless someone comes forward to take over the running of the event, which is taking place this Sunday (March 28) it could be lost.

The 85-mile race sets off from Valley End School at 10.30am. This year’s 80-strong field will include Gary Dodd, of Sigma Sport, who won in 2005 and last year, and Tony Gibb, of Cycle Premier-Metaltek CRT, the winner in 2006.

Former Italian pro Flavio Zappi, 48, will also be in action leading a team of young riders under the banner Team Zappi. He won a King of the Mountains jersey in the Giro d’Italia in the 1980s and is now resident in the UK, owning a cafe in Oxford.
