Alejandro Valverde wins Fleche Wallonne for record fourth time

Third victory in a row for Spaniard on the Mur de Huy

Movistar's Alejandro Valverde has won the Ardennes classic La Fleche Wallonne for a record fourth time.

Ten years on from his first victory in the race, now in its 80th edition, the Spaniard's win today is his third consecutive success in it, a feat only achieved once before by the Belgian rider Marcel Kint during World War II.

Valverde bided his time on the closing climb of the Mur de Huy, following a move from Etixx-Quick Step's Dan Martin before launching his attack.

Martin finished third with his team mate Julian Alaphilippe taking second place, just as he did 12 months ago.

Earlier, Dimension Data's British rider Steve Cummings launched a solo attack from the break but he was brought back inside the closing 20 kilometres.

Before that, a crash involving three riders from Trek-Segafredo resulted in Fränk Schleck abandoning the race, the Luxembourg rider looking as though he may have broken his collarbone.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

I'm afraid I just have no faith in the bloke. It's my personal opinion. I obviously have no proof of any wrongdoing but just can't warm to him.

Good ride by Dan Martin.

Ahmen to both those statements, I've never been a fan of the winner but a huge, huge fan of Dan Martin: having met him I can say he's a really nice, honest person.
