Breaking News: "Minor injuries", bike written off, as Chris Newton hit by car

Driver flees scene after cyclist struck while out training

Rapha-Condor-Sharp’s Chris Newton has escaped with “minor injuries” after being struck by a car while out training this morning in a collision that left his bike a write-off.

The news was broken on Twitter by Team Manager John Herety, who tweeted a message earlier this morning that read: “Some bad Karma around me, Chris Newton knocked off by car 30 mins ago. Minor injuries to him, bike a write off. Car stopped then drove off!”

We’ve spoken to a spokesman for Rapha-Condor-Sharp who was unable to confirm the extent of Newton's injuries, although he said he certainly hadn't been seriously injured, and confirmed that a car pulled across the cyclist at a junction and that the driver fled after the accident, with Newton subsequently giving a statement to the police.

Newton, who has won World Championship titles and Olympic medals on the track and also has some impressive palmarès on the road, has been an integral part of the Rapha-Condor-Sharp line-up during the Halfords Tour Series and is due to take part in the British National Road Race Championships this Sunday.

I'm just fed up http://road.cc/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Yahoo!/angry.gif with this hit and run mentality that seems to be increasing (hoping its just better reporting but I'm not convinced). Sincerely wish Chris all the best for a fast recovery. My next stop is a helmet camera web site for an early Christmas present (to myself!) http://road.cc/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Yahoo!/thinking.gif
