Video: Winner of race stops for TV interview – rider behind crashes into him

Incident happened after finish of today's Tour of Hainan in China, won by Giant-Alpecin's Max Walscheid...

Giant-Alpecin rider Max Walscheid took his maiden pro victory in Stage 3 of the Tour of Hainan in China today – then, as he stopped to give a TV interview, a Lampre-Merida rider crashed into his bike.

The unfortunate rider who ran into the German’s back wheel and somersaulted over his own handlebars was former world junior and under-23 road champion, Matej Mohoric.

The Slovenian is one of a number of current Lampre-Merida riders who will form the core of the China-based Project TJ Sport team that makes its debut next year.

The commentator exclaims, “That was not Walscheid’s fault,” and while it seems Mohoric may have had his head down as he chatted with a team mate, the rider immediately behind the Giant-Alpecin man had change his line too as the German suddenly slowed then moved across to the TV camera.

Here’s footage of the actual finish, in which Walscheid beat sprinters including Mohoric’s team mate Roberto Ferrari, who finished fourth.

The 23-year-old Walscheid is at the end of his first full season with Giant-Alpecin and in June was runner-up to Lotto-Belisol's Andre Greipel in the German national championship road race, beating Etixx-QuickStep's Marcel Kittel into third place.
