Five cyclists hospitalised after car swerves into them in Cumbria

Two members of Carlisle's Border City Wheelers Cycling Club remain in hospital...

Five cyclists from Carlisle’s Border City Wheelers Cycling Club were injured on Saturday afternoon when a car swerved into them while they were taking part in a regular club run. All five were taken to hospital to have their injuries treated, and three of them have since been released.

According to BBC News, the incident took place at approximately 1425 on Saturday at Mossband Hall, situated on the Gretna to Rockcliffe road that runs next to the M6 to the north of Carlisle. The cyclists were heading North when they were struck by a Citroën Saxo car heading in the opposite direction.

An update on the Border City Wheelers website stated that as of yesterday evening, Nigel Athroll remained in Carlisle hospital following surgery, while Peter Priestley was being transferred to Sunderland hospital for a second operation. The other three injured cyclists – Chris Dale, Dave Rawle and Paul Gavin – had all been discharged from hospital.

Cumbria Police have confirmed to road.cc that the car was being driven by a 24-year-old male from Annan in Dumfriesshire, and added that they are still investigating the incident and that no arrest or charges have yet been made.

Also on Saturday, a 35-year-old male cyclist died in hospital after being hit by a van near Kelso in the Scottish Borders, according to BBC News. The fatal incident happened at 1945 between Roxburgh and Ormiston and the victim was first taken to Borders General Hospital then Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he died of his injuries later that evening.

Investigating how a car swerved accross the road into them? Now, I am generalising but a lot of saxo's driven by 24 year olds are either modded to within an inch of their life and handling characteristics are dramatically changed (I know because, embarassingly, I went through this phase myself...with a 306 though) or the car is travelling at high speed.

This may not be the case here but it is unlikely that the car swerved due to a mechanical failure, a puncture or the like because that would be very easily identifiable from the outset and the council's road safety dept would quite clearly see this in any investigative work.

At the end of the day, a car swerved accross the road. In my experience this is usually due to either excess adrenaline and the will to impress others by intimidating other road users or innattention caused by a phone, radio, dropped cigarette...
