Video: Dan McLay wins as rival celebrates too early - the latest instalment in a long running comedy of errors

It's not the first time a rider has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory - and it won't be the last...

It's one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to a pro cyclist - starting celebrating a victory only for another rider to pass you ahead of the line to snatch the won.

That's what happened yesterday at the 77th Tour de l'Eurométropole in Belgium, with the Cofidis rider Anthony Turgis left ruing his premature jubilation as Britain's Dan McLay, riding for the Fortuneo-Oscaro team, emerged triumphant.

Turgis was also overhauled by the Wanty-Groupe Gobert rider, Kenny Dehaes, to finish in third place at the end of the 188.6-kilometre race from La Louviere to Tournoi.

It doesn't just happen to the pros, of course - remember this story from last year of a rider getting pipped to the line at the ia Roma Twilight Criterium support race in Cirencester, Gloucestershire?

Ha, I got pipped (to be fair it was never in any doubt) in a gallop earlier this year by Alex Frame at JLT. If I'd come round him I know I'd have gone nuts over the line.

So it was a probably for the best he beat me as there was a dude 10 seconds up the road taking a glorious solo victory that I'd totally missed.

I was basically saved a proper moment there... it was bad enough, on reflection, congratulatiing Mr Frame on his result. I bet he thought 'who's this joker?'

Good times.

Basically this is an easy error to make.

More or less embarrassing than celebrating when you've come second not realising that a breakaway rider has already crossed the line? Good work by McLay, proves it's worth not giving in until you've crossed the line. Hopefully this'll be some good confidence for him for next year.

Wouldn't have won anyway, Mcclay and the other guy were coming up very fast, even if he'd not raised his arms I'm pretty sure je would have being beaten. Still, bad mistake/error on his part, most definitely not the first and won't be the last.

Even from this short piece, it's easy to see these European teams have some GREAT names!

Fortuneo-Oscaro. Wanty-Groupe Gobert.

Gems!

I must start looking through the full list!

From the overhead shot, the winner is already alongside him as he's taking his hands off the bars.

From the front he looks like he loses it when he sits down & the chasing pair are still charging hard.
