Nobody wants to meet a car coming the wrong way down a one-way street – least of all when they’re riding a bike along a cycle track in the dark.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 7.15am in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
John says he was going down a cycle track next to a one-way road when this driver drove “aggressively” towards him in the opposite direction.
“He put on full lights to either dazzle me or hide his plates. I had to crash into the verge.”
The driver didn’t stop, but another did check John was okay.
“Heart rate was up and obviously a bit shook, but otherwise fine.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

Hi folks, thanks for the supporting comments.
It was on Wellington Road in Phoenix Park. Not sure why the two way cycle track is on the outside. What goes on in the dark minds of the planners here is difficult to figure some times. However, it takes a special type of idiot to drive the wrong way up this route. It is very clearly marked and sign posted on the other end. This person was just a completly tool.
I am delighted to hear that we in Ireland are again part of the the UK. Hopefully ye can pay to fix our health service now
Thanks for support road.cc - Chapeau!
P.S - Police here reckon little will be done without car reg.
And people complain when cars park in the cycle lane!
"...from around the country – today it’s Dublin"
does this mean the Brexit Irish border issue has been resolved? By the Republic returning to the welcoming arms of the Imperial mother?
Why would you have the cycle track on the outside?
There’s a cycle track on either side of Chesterfield Avenue in Phoenix. Both tracks allow for two way traffic of cyclists. The cyclist is on the track alongside the oncoming traffic. Though on looking at it again it could be North Road. It’s been a good few years since I was last in Phoenix Park. Could be that priorities have been changed onnsome of the roads.
Good job it was a grass verge available and not a brick wall.
I suspect even if John hadn't got out of the way, and the car had hit him, it would have still just carried on going... Nice dive to safety, BTW!
