If you're using Firefox, download the Facebook Container add-on, it will stop FB's cookies from tracking everything else you do and sending it to the Fake News mills in the US.
(You should also use Google Container, if you're still using Google rather than DuckDuckGo)
If you're using or contemplating using DuckDuckGo, you might also take a good look at StartPage (recommended by Edward Snowden). Most users won't bother because Google will be a little easier for them, so long as it generates the most profits.
P.S. Nice bike, nice cycling gear Matthew.
Pahh!! The accursed FB again. You may register this as a complaint from a long time member
But don't we all want the likes of dhb to be spending their marketing budget directly with the likes of Road.cc (who will of course maintain strict editorial integrity) rather than hoping for some click trail crumbs from the likes of FaceArse?
I'm still waiting for the MySpace competitions.
Whilst I'm waiting, I'll just leave this Facebook paranoia link here: https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/elections/2018/10/we-don-t-know-wh...
Interesting piece, anecdotally at least it feels like much the same is happening over here. Even more so with Twitter - Instagram is the place to be, but of course that's owned by FB.
Now who's being paranoid?
Is it everyone that's paying attention?
Given that it's a 'like' comp on FB (and we don't usually do any other sort) neither us, nor dhb will be harvesting any data - all we'll see is a long list of the names of the people that have liked the comp and the only way we'll be able to contact them it to message direct - which is why you need to keep an eye on your other message requests folder. As Myles says though I suppose FB will take note of the fact that you 'liked' some dhb stuff and target any future dhb FB ads accordingly. But at least you do actually like dhb stuff.
Yeah, it's not a lack of trust of yourselves or DHB and I personally have no problem with bike-related ads. The issue is that more nefarious organisations will then get to profile us even if we haven't agreed to that, but just because a friend of a friend decided to install an app.
Looks like Facebook usage might be dropping amongst the young-uns: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/05/facebook-exodus-44-percent-of-americans-...
I'm not (honestly!) a tin-foil-hat-wearing-conspiracy-theorist, but I'm not on any social media. I'm registered on a couple of internet fora and a commenter on a few sites. But I've been a commenter on this site for several years, and have noticed how more and more of your hosted competitions are just 'like' draws on FB.
I presume, Tony, that it makes your "in-house" admin much easier if you're not actually administrating the competition yourselves? But it does mean that a number of your regular readers are completely unable to even enter the competitions on their favourite cycling-related news site/community.
(I've said my piece, so I promise not to make any more disparaging "aaarggh!" noises in future).
Competitions are not gifts to loyal readers. They are a way of promoting the brand involved, in this case DHB and Road.cc's Facebook presence.
I don't have an Instagram account, probably too old to see the point, and competions come up in that too from other sites / brands. My choice would be to get an account and enter or recognise that I can't be part of the competition. I have chosen option 2, but it is my choice.
Continually moaning that you can't enter a Facebook only competition kind of misses the point.
I get that, I really do. It does kind of make explicit that any of these FB competitions are really just a way of hoovering up marketing contacts for the brands involved, but hey...
(Nevertheless, I wouldn't moan about it if there were any competitions which weren't FB only).
Ihope that everyone abouve can take a minute away from their conspiracy theories to notice
1, its a Nice jersey!
2, The US government doesnt really want YOUR data. The cyclist who returns his borrowed books on time isnt on their watch list.
3, So you get an email from Wiggle...trying to sell you the jersey you liked on faceshitebook. Hardly going to ruin your day is it?
No get that book back and step over all the first world problems on the way.
Like that jersey thou
I trust you don't have loyalty cards, credit cards and use your browser on a proxy ip in private setting with a tin foil hat on.
They only want your personal details for your own safety, and to flog them on.
Those other things don't subvert the democratic process by spreading lies.
Saisnbury's and Nectar Points are in bed with the Daily Mail.
Say no more!
I think we're verging into off-topic territory here, but my supermarket of choice is Aldi. I don't have to spend ages staring at different offers and trying to do mental arithmetic to figure out if the big box is better value than the buy-one-get-one-half-price small boxes.
I grow all my own food, don't have a TV and to be 100%
paranoidsure I don't even have a computer.Hmmmm...

It's not that, I know about that. It's just that Facebook's shit.
AAArrrghhhh!!!
