National Circuit Race returns to Beverley for record fourth time

East Yorkshire town expecting major financial boost from event

The East Yorkshire town of Beverley is already counting the windfall – an estimated £500,000 according to the East Riding Mail – from a fourth consecutive visit by the British Cycling National Circuit Race Championships.

The Mail got the scoop of the town’s selection for a record fourth time from the event's media chief, Michael Boyle. The championships will return on Friday, July 29 and will kick off with 70 minutes or racing around the town in an event that will take the same format at this year’s race.

This championship event will be followed by the Big G sportive event on Saturday, July 30, in which riders can pick one of three scenic routes around the Yorkshire Wolds.
The finale to the weekend takes place on the Sunday with the 98-mile East Yorkshire Classic which will be covered by Eurosport.

Michael Boyle told the Mail: "It is phenomenal. Getting this event four years in a row has never happened before in a town or city.

"It is hoped Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy will be back to try to retain his title. This year there were more than 5,000 spectators lining the streets on the Friday."

The event is just one of a number that have recently helped boost the town’s profile including the Beverley Folk Festival, Literature Festival and the Early Music Festival.

East Riding Council's director of planning and regeneration Alan Menzies told the newspaper: "It's superb news. It's a major event and it's remarkable Beverley will be hosting the event for the fourth consecutive year. It is unheard of."
