Cyclist who died at Vélo Birmingham & Midlands named

The cyclist who died at the Vélo Birmingham & Midlands closed road sportive earlier this month has been named as Michael Lunn from Derbyshire.

The 50-year-old is believed to have come off his bike during a twisting descent on Coleshill Road, Atherstone, some 23 miles after the start, according to Warwickshire Police.

His identity was revealed today as a coroner’s inquest opened into his death and was adjourned pending police completing their investigation, reports the Birmingham Mail.

He was one of 17,000 cyclists taking part in the 100-mile event on Sunday 12 May.

Mr Lunn was taken to hospital by air ambulance but died from his injuries sustained in the incident, which happened at around 7.50am.

Organisers CSM Events, who have been in touch with his family, set up a Just Giving page in his memory to raise money for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance – described as “a charity that was close to his heart and who actually attended to him” following his crash.

To date, the page has raised more than £26,000.
