The head of Bristol’s biggest bus operator, First West of England, has blamed cyclists as well as traffic for causing delays that have seen the operator flooded with complaints – or at least, that’s what a headline in the Bristol Post would have you believe.
As road.cc user Brooksby pointed out in a forum post, the headline, First Bus blames delays on cyclists and traffic as complaints pile up, might lead one to wonder, “Is it cyclists using bus lanes? Being inconsiderate?”
Actually, no. What First West of England managing director James Freeman actually said was: “We have seen extremely icy weather move in on Monday and Tuesday, followed by thick fog on Wednesday, which unfortunately slowed traffic more than usual all through Bristol during rush hour.
“In addition, we saw a surge people, many of whom we believe were cyclists using buses to avoid those potentially dangerous conditions.
“As a result, buses were getting full quicker, with consequential delays for passengers boarding at stops closer in to the city centre.”
As Brooksby pointed out: “So First are actually blaming people for actually using the service they're providing, and the Post is – as usual – putting together any clickbaity headline they can.
“Grrr.”
We’re glad that’s been cleared up.

So....lots of cyclists on motorways then? Would explain why every single morning the travel update lists the number of motorways facing delays and closures due to accidents. All the damn cyclists weaving all over the place and using pedestrian crossings JUST to cause innocent, facebook video watching, mobile phone using, drivers to crash...SMH
It was the hedge cutting thing that made me very thankful for trying out tubeless. My off roadish trek out to Henley seemed to be the week that covering the bridleways and tracks with thorns was the thing to do. Only noticed because one of them was attached to a twig. Pulled out multiples. When I checked the next day a handful more were pulled out. Lot of space to hide in 3 inch hardpack knobblies. If I had known how many I would have kept count.
An anchovie fix in the filth and drizzle and I'm sold. I'm not ever going to ghetto convert my other 2. I'm not looking forward to changing tyres and they are more expensive, but...
With the thorny cycle path, I reckon that any cyclist that gets punctures from using it would have a solid case to sue the council for the repair bill (new inner tube, tyre and the mechanic's time).
Much as I understand that cycling on the motorway is wrong, against the law and dangerous, though I did spend months working on the hard shoulder of the M3, but we were safe as we wore Hi Viz and the vehicle had a flashing light...
But does anyone think that the police are so quick to tweet when drivers use their vehicles on cycle lanes, proper solid line ones, and of course parking does mean they have driven on it. Some of them around me seem to be very popular of cyclists as they seem so well used that those bicycle tyres have worn down the paint. And the police's twitter would be filled with drivers entering the bike box at the ASL...
What is more dangerous?
Bez has of courde discussed the insanity of motorway cycling in his excellent Beyond the Kerb

re: motorway cyclist. I suspect the information was provided because highway code on who can use a motorway would have been covered with driving lessons / CPT.
After all there are no signs at the start of most motorway entries to state no cycling etc.
More likely it was an attempt at 'humour'.
Monaco resident visits French football team owned by another monaco resident. Evidently a slow news day.
It was purely so I could make the Nice pun if I'm honest, well worth the four minutes it took me to make the post in my book.
Fair enough... the pun was the best bit!
Pun-wise, I liked Thorn on my ride, but the Eurythmics reference may have eluded some.
Not me, I was in hospital aged 13 having my leg put back together after a football injury when that was number 1. it's etched on my consciousness
You should have known better, and got what you deserved!
You'll be looking for a story about punctures caused by broken beer bottles tomorrow no doubt.
Good spot, missed that one!
