This Sunday sees one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated races on the UCI WorldTour calendar, the Tour of Flanders - but while Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara and co are fighting it out on the Belgian cobbles in the second Monument of the season, many of Britain’s top riders will be battling with the wind and rough roads in the closest this country has to a Flanders Classic – the Maldon Dengie Tour ‘Hell of the East.’
Previously the Tour of the Dengie Marshes, the Essex race was revived in 2009 by Alan Rosner, who wanted to bring a race to the British calendar that offered something unique.
With sections of rutted farm track standing in for the pavé encountered in races such as the Tour of Flanders, and the ever present threat of wind blowing in from the North Sea across a flat, bleak landscape, he’s certainly managed that – there really is nothing else like it in Britain.
For 2012, there are now nine sections of those farm tracks, as well as more miles of narrow paved roads, which is where Rosner believes the race is won and lost.
Since its relaunch, the race has gone from strength to strength each year – in 2012, for the first time, it forms part of the UK Premier Calendar Series.
Last year, Rapha Condor Sharp’s Zak Dempster won from a strong field with some of the action captured in a great video from top photographer Geoff Waugh.
Now with Endura Racing, Dempster will be back to defend his title this year, along with team mates including early-season sensation Jon Tiernan Locke.
The 'Hell of the East' will also feature a past winner of Paris-Roubaix - the 'Hell of the North' - in the rather imposing shape of Magnus Backstedt, riding for Team UK Youth.
Supported by the local council, the race starts at 1pm in Maldon High Street, finishing there around four hours later.
There will also be a prize for the best under-23 rider, sponsored by Condor Cycles, with Ben Spurrier from the London-based brand commenting: "We are delighted to support such a tough and unique race.
"We are proud to introduce the Condor U23 prize for best placed younger rider.
"We believe it is vital we raise the profile of young riders as their are the next generation of British Cycling."
"Alan Rosner has given up his life to organising the race and devising a formidable course and we hope plenty of people will come out to watch and support our domestic teams and domestic race.
"You don't need to cross to the continent to find mud, sweat and great racing anymore," he added.
