Video: New De Rosa Idol with hydraulic disc brakes

A video first look at the brand new De Rosa Idol Disc launched at the recent Cycle Show

More and more manufacturers are adding disc-equipped road bikes to their 2014 ranges and one of the latest is Italian brand De Rosa, who unveiled their new Idol Disc at the recent Cycle Show.

The Idol Disc is based on the regular Idol, the company's top-end carbon race bike, but with an updated frame design to accommodated the disc brakes. De Rosa, like most manufacturers, has opted to stick with regular quick release axles, rather than adopt bolt-thru axles from mountain bikes which some brands are doing. To ensure the frame can cope with the forces generated by the disc brakes, they've used a blend of super high modulus, T1000 and T800 carbon fibre in key areas, especially the chainstays, to keep everything tracking in the same direction.

The front disc hose is routed inside the fork which has been done really nicely. The gear cables, or wires - it's Di2 compatible - are also routed internally.  It's seen here with Shimano's new hydraulic disc brake groupset, which is proving to be rather scarce at the moment; SRAM has certainly got the jump with its Red 22 Hydro disc offering, as it's quite a bit more common. Most of the latest disc road bikes are 2014 models so it's still early for them to properly start trickling through.

Fear not if you're not a fan of disc brakes on road bikes though, De Rosa will still be offering the regular Idol with caliper brakes.

The De Rosa Idol Disc will cost £2,400 for the frame and fork when it's available. Six frame sizes will be offered.
