Aggressive driver in total meltdown with Carmarthenshire cyclists after close pass

Motorist tells off-road.cc contributor Matt Page, “You don’t f*cking live here, you live in Llangadog, now f*ck off!”

A Carmarthenshire cyclist who received a close pass from an aggressive driver who then parked up to shout at the rider and his companion, began filming the aftermath – including the motorist repeatedly yelling, “Do you remember smacking my car?” and telling him, “You don’t f*cking live here, you live in Llangadog, now f*ck off!”

Race organiser and contributor to our sister site off-road.cc Matt Page told us that the incident happened last week “just outside my home town of Llandovery and the road is the A483.

“I was riding with a friend at the time and doing a good pace and it’s a dead straight road with no traffic and that is why I have absolutely no idea why he was so irate as he passed initially,” Matt said.

“He close passed us tooting, then stopped in the middle of both carriageways 100 metres later and started shouting, so obviously has a big issue with cyclists in general.

“After driving off he was stopped, waiting for us to come along and his stance and manner, I knew he was about to start something, which is why I started filming,” Matt continued.

The footage shows the driver asking, “What’s your name?” with Matt telling him, then saying, “First of all you overtook us when we were riding legally two abreast, completely legal … ”

“So you were blocking the entire road, preventing anyone from overtaking?” the driver responded.

“Excuse me,” replied Matt, “you do not understand the Highway Code,” which makes it clear that cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast.

The motorist, raising his voice, continued to insist that “You were blocking the entire road,” before repeatedly asking Matt, “Do you remember smacking my car?” – something Matt denied – with the driver perilously close to a meltdown of Basil Fawltyesque proportions.

The driver then told Matt to “F*ck off,” and receiving the reply, “I’m from here,” responds, “Sure you are.”

When Matt said, “I live in Llangadog” – a village around 5km southwest of Llandovery – he is told, by the increasingly animated motorist, “Llangadog, do you? So you don’t f*cking live here, you live in Llangadog, now f*ck off!”

The driver, who returned to his car to take his own phone and start filming, again asks Matt his name and accuses him once more of hitting his car – an allegation he continued to deny.

The motorist, who seemed to think he may have grounds for an insurance claim, demands Matt’s address, and burst out laughing when he received the response, “I know all the police around here,” continuing to insist Matt wasn’t a local while not answering the question of where he is from himself.

The man then speeds off, making a punishment pass and beeping his horn, but the episode isn’t over yet.

“After the initial altercation he was in Llandovery town centre and upon spotting us again came to confront us,” Matt said.

At that last encounter, he repeatedly asked Matt, “What would you do if I slapped on your brand new car? What would you do? What would you do? What would you do,” before walking off with a parting greeting of “Tosser.”

“This has been reported to the Police on the day of the incident,” Matt added, “but the case has yet to be assigned to an officer despite it being a week ago.”

First of all, the aggressive driver commited a S5 public order offence for swearing in public.  The riders need to inform the police  of this(video is the corroboration).  The other offence is driving aggressivley and sounding horn for no reason.

I presume there is further video from his dangerous overtake earlier

The riders need to report this to the police for S5 public order offence.  This driver will cause serious injury if not brought to account for this attitude.  Also the aggressive driving

Terrible behaviour from the driver. Why can't drivers just 'own-up' to their mistakes and apologise accordingly, rather than escalating it. If he is an ex-policeman he's doing a diservice to the police. I think drivers behaviour is slowly changing for the better in Carmarthenshire (and Towy valley in particular) but clearly there is still work to do. I shudder to think how younger (school age) cyclists would have felt confronted by such aggressive behaviour :-(.

Matt, have you considered contacting Dafydd Llewelyn the police commissioner for our county to inform of the lack of follow-up since you logged the call with the police for this incident. I know the police are stretched but they should at least got back to you by now.

I love the way that he's ridiculously and aggressively territorial, but he's got an English accent and he's living in west Wales.

Also, hope you're doing OK, Matt. I know from experience that these incidents can play on your mind for a while after they've happened.

Well if the name and links below is the same person, he is ex Police and immune from actually getting charged for anything. Probably why he smirked when Matt mentioned them,

Not so. If there is irrefutable evidence of the offence and someone makes an official complaint. He will be prosecuted.

There is the video and two witnesses

Hmmm, evidence of misconduct of Police and former Police officers will mean they will be treated just like anyone else.....
Like the one posted here several weeks ago when the woman driver knocked the cyclist down whilst "passing him with plenty of room" at a traffic light controlled junction. Then blamed the cyclist, then said she used to work for the Police. The attending officer then stated she had done nothing wrong and the cyclist hit her.

Or maybe the evidence supplied in the apparently multiple cases of indecent exposure Couzens did in the days leading up to his murder of Sarah Everard. (which has caused the suspension of the officers who appeared to ignore it)

Or West Midlands Police investigating Yorkshires Police abysmal failing at Hillsborough actually changing witness statements and telling witnesses they were mistaken to protect their own.

I'm sorry if you are a Police officer and hate hearing these accusations, and probably have plenty of evidence of Police following the correct procedures when investigating internally. But the popular evidence shows the opposite.

Well, I'd have lost the plot and wrapped my bike round him. Then more. And probably have gone to prison, but at least the world would be free of that cowson.

Anti-Corbyn, pro-Brexit, little-Englander, sees the need to bring up WW2 when England play Germany  and looks like he's part of the hunting crew.

He does seem a bit angry doesn’t he. He has the look af an angry man too. I don’t know why you would bother to stop and chat to someone like him.

This cyclist v driver, driver v cyclist gets a bit tedious we are all victims it seems.

But this driver does seem to be a twat I’ll give you that. And now we have his reg and I am  living not to far from him, I’ll keep an eye out and see if we can create a sequel.

The irony of complaining about being held up but then stopping for a confrontation is always lost on these idiots.

The appropriate response, once he'd started effing and blinding in your face, was to call 999 and report a threatening road rage driver.

In instances like this where the vehicle has stopped up the road and the driver has got out, I was advised by a police friend to simply stop where you are on the road.

After a close pass , we were riding two abreast, and horn blowing episode by a BMW X5 on a clear country road the driver pulled in about 200 mtrs further up,we stopped too and watched him get out of his car as he screamed abuse. We watched him for an age in what seemed like a Mexican stand off, we started laughing at the absurdity of the situation which resulted in him storming off.

Best form of defence is non confrontation and that includes words say nothing, your life is more valuable than trying to convice an angry, irrational person that they are wrong.

Although in the early 80's an eccentric club mate now RIP, used to attach carbide lathe tools to the end of one of these pop out refelectors  more than once he showed us a swirl of car paint work on the tool tip!

The cyclist should never have engaged with the motorist and giving his name and suburb is ridiculous.

A few months ago I had a very close pass, and slapped the car roof.  Driver stopped up ahead, but I didn't, and lost them easily at the next junction in town.  Unfortunately, it's possibly the most confrontational actions one can take, especially for drivers with raging gammon tendencies, but difficult not to do when vehicle is so dangerously close.  I keep telling myself to avoid touching a too close car next time, and instead shout uber loudly, & just capture pass on front/rear cams.  Unfortunately all these drivers will want to do is yell in your face, and will not listen to any reasoned protestations about dangerous driving & the highway code.  Never set off on the bike before a driver in this condition /  be prepared to deviate from original route temporarily for safety.

A quick slap to a panel is probably the most effective way to warn a driver that they are way too close, but it can lead to further agression.

Sorry to post this yet again but this is an example of how a trivial situation can escalate out of all proportion if you have a nutter on the other end.

The only way to appease the Cycling Gods, would be to post his address online.
Then invite the holy Disciples, to visit him with gifts of Gold, Frankincense and rocks.
Showering his car with... love.
😉

And do it at random intervals, giving him time to get the respray done before scratching it again; repeat ad infinitum.

Most of the road rage attacks on me have been by people with low tech brains -apart from one: I was cycling home from work in West London on a cycle lane with the normal stationary traffic on the right when a car turned left in front of me and parked half on the pavement and half on the cycle lane leaving me just enough room to get by, but as I went by the driver opened the door in front of me, I got off my bike and told her what I thought of her - this beautiful filmstar/popstar type of women got out of the car, put her arms around me and fondled my buttocks, she hugged me and kept saying " you're so good looking, you're so good looking - I thought apology accepted and went on my way!

It happened a long time ago before video cameras existed - only film cameras in those days.
